In metal plates, the crack propagation mechanism sets the amount of the plastic deformation before failure: a slanted or a cup–cone crack typically yields limited plate thinning within the fracture process zone, while large deformation precedes cup–cup crack propagation. The present work investigates the effect of intermetallic particles on the propagation mechanisms and the associated fracture surface morphologies when tearing Al 1050 plates under far-field mode I loading. Both single edge notched and double edge notched tension specimens, with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 5 mm, were tested. The chemical compositions of intermetallic particles were determined by performing energy dispersive X-ray measurements, and their morphological features were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Likewise, SEM images were taken to display the fracture surfaces, and the details of the surface morphology were visualized in three dimensions by using X-ray Tomography scanning. The experimental results indicate that an increase in the volume fraction, size, and aspect ratio of the intermetallic particles all promote slanted/cup–cone cracks, while a low amount of small, circular particles leads to cup–cup cracks. Furthermore, two-dimensional finite element simulations for mode I crack propagation support the experimental findings.

A Study on Tensile Strength of Compacted Fine-Grained Soils
Dagar, Volkan; Çokça, Erdal (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-08-01)
The tensile strength of clay is a major mechanical parameter and the main controlling parameter of tensile crack development which is generally encountered in geostructures. In this experimental study, 8-shaped direct tensile test and split tensile test were used to measure the tensile strength of compacted clay soil. Unconfined compression tests on the same clay samples were also carried out. Tensile strength and unconfined compression test results were compared. Laboratory tests were performed on Ankara c...
A Study on the tensile strength of compacted Ankara clay and kaolin clay
Dağar, Volkan; Çokça, Erdal; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Tensile strength of clay, is a major mechanical parameter and is the main controlling parameter of tensile crack development which is generally encountered in geostructures. The researches to determine the tensile strength of clays are very limited. There are two kinds of methods which are used to measure the tensile strength of soils and these are named as, indirect and direct methods. In this experimental study, a direct tensile test apparatus was developed for measurement and understanding of the tensile...
The effect of shape memory alloys on the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints using the damage plasticity model
Halahla, Abdulsamee M.; Abu Tahnat, Yazan B.; Almasri, Amin H.; Voyiadjis, George Z. (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-01)
Using shape memory alloys (SMA) bars can significantly enhance the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete joints, where they can replace the conventional steel reinforcement. This research focuses on studying the effect of using SMA on the ductility capacity of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints at different column axial load levels. Finite element analysis was carried out and compared with the experimental results from the literature for verification purposes, and both were compared with th...
Investigating the effect of number of weld passes on the residual stress state of steel plates by micro magnetic method
Erian, Gökhan; Batıgün, Caner; Çam, İbrahim; Gür, Cemil Hakan (null; 2012-09-17)
Variations of surface residual stresses with subsequent weld passes were investigated in the API 5L X70 steel plates by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method. The plates were welded by applying different number of passes under fully clamped condition. After each weld pass, MBN signal and hardness distributions on the front and back surfaces of the plates were measured. A specific calibration procedure and set-up was used for conversion of MBN signals into elastic stress values. The results were analyzed by...
THE INFLUENCE OF MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ON STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE OF COMPOSITE OVERWRAPPED PRESSURE VESSELS
Yurdakul, Kıvanç; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-2-04)
In this study, the influence of defects that are occurred in manufacturing operations of filament wound composite overwrapped pressure vessels on burst pressure is investigated experimentally. Firstly, material characterization methods such as tensile testing and fiber volume fraction testing of carbon/epoxy composite specimens are completed. Following determining of different layer configurations for small scale composite pressure vessels, manufacturing and burst testing of vessels are accomplished. Ef...
