Design and performance analysis of a pump-turbine system using computational fluid dynamics
Yıldız, Mehmet; Albayrak, Kahraman; Çelebioğlu, Kutay; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
In this thesis, a parametric methodology is investigated to design a Pump-Turbine system using Computational Fluid Dynamics ( CFD ). The parts of Pump-Turbine are created parametrically according to the experience curves and theoretical design methods. Then, these parts are modified to obtain 500 kW turbine working as a pump with 28.15 meters head. The final design of Pump-Turbine parts are obtained by adjusting parameters according to the results of the CFD simulations. The designed parts of the Pump-Turbi...
Scrutinization of flow characteristics through orifices
Yıldırım, Tuğçe; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Orifices are essential devices for measurement and control of flow. It is important to define the flow field and understand the flow characteristics behind an orifice for the sake of reliability measures in many hydraulic engineering applications. Since analytical and experimental solutions are restricted, a numerical solution is obtained using volume of fluid (VOF) method with the CFD solver, FLUENT, for sharp crested orifices, orifice tubes and slots. The results are compared to the available data in the ...
Design of water distribution system by optimization using reliability considerations
Akdoğan, Tevfik; Merzi, Nuri; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In spite of a wide research, design of water distribution networks are not realized using optimization techniques. One reason for this fact is, design of water distribution networks is evaluated, mostly, as a least-cost optimization problem where pipe diameters being the only decision variables. The other motivation for preferring the traditional modeling practice is that, existing optimization algorithms are not presented to the user as friendly as it should be. In fact, water distribution systems are very...
Management of reservoir sedimentation case studies from Turkey
Çetinkaya, Oğuz Kağan; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
Siltation is becoming a big problem as the dams get older all over the world. Conservation and sustainable management of existing reservoirs is gaining more importance than constructing new dams. In this study the program RESCON, which is outcome of a World Bank sponsored project, has been used to examine sediment removal strategies (flushing, hydrosuction sediment removal, dredging and trucking) for four dams of Turkey namely Çubuk I Dam, Bayındır Dam, İvriz Dam and Borçka Dam. Sediment measurements are ma...
Hydraulic characteristics of tyrolean weirs having steel racks and circular-perforated entry
Şahiner, Halit; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Tyrolean type water-intake structures are commonly used on mountain rivers to supply water to hydropower stations. The amount of water to be diverted from the main channel is the major concern in these kind of structures and should not be less than the design discharge. In this study a physical model of a Tyrolean type water-intake structure was built at the laboratory and the diverted flow from the main channel through the intake structure having steel racks and perforated plates of different types were me...
