Yttria Stabilized Zirconia/Clay Composites for Dental Applications

2021-09-05
Among dental bioceramics, yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is gaining increased use due to its superior mechanical properties and aesthetic concerns [1]. It is available in the market especially for the fabrication of crowns, inlays, dental implant abutments and fixed partial dentures [2]. Clay based minerals, being one of the most common ceramic raw materials, is also used for various medical purposes including antacids, gastrointestinal protectors and drug delivery modifiers [3]. Recent studies revealed that clay minerals are beneficial for osteoblast adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation [4]. For instance, enhanced osteoblast profileration was reported after the incorporation of montmorillonite in chitosan-poly(glycolic acid) films [4]. In addition, enhanced osteogenic response of preosteoblast cell line MC3T3 was obtained with the addition of laponite in several polymeric matrices including poly(ethylene oxide), poly(ethylene) glycol and GelMA [4]. Therefore, in this study, clay was incorporated in YSZ to enhance its mechanical and biological properties for dental applications.

Anodized Nanostructured 316L Stainless Steel Enhances Osteoblast Functions and Exhibits Anti-Fouling Properties
Erdoğan, Yaşar Kemal; Ercan, Batur (2023-01-01)
Poor osseointegration and infection are among the major challenges of 316L stainless steel (SS) implants in orthopedic applications. Surface modifications to obtain a nanostructured topography seem to be a promising method to enhance cellular interactions of 316L SS implants. In this study, arrays of nanodimples (NDs) having controlled feature sizes between 25 and 250 nm were obtained on 316L SS surfaces by anodic oxidation (anodization). Results demonstrated that the fabrication of NDs increased the surfac...

Ti6Al4V alloy is successfully used as implant material in dental and orthopedic surgeries for years due to its much better compatibility, lower density, corrosion resistance, etc. compared to the other metals. Meantime, modification of the surface of these alloys is needed to enhance material-tissue interaction and osteointegration between the implant and the bone. In this study, Ti6Al4V alloy surfaces were modified by application of RF magnetron sputtering technique and coated with zinc (Zn) doped hydroxya...
Enhanced bioactivity and low temperature degradation resistance of yttria stabilized zirconia/clay composites for dental applications
Tufan, Yiğithan; Park, Jongee; Öztürk, Abdullah; Ercan, Batur (2022-12-01)
© 2022 Elsevier LtdYttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/clay composites were produced to improve osseointegration and undesired tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation (low temperature degradation, LTD) of YSZ ceramics so that long-term clinical success of YSZ implants is achieved. Various amounts (0.5,1,2, and 4 wt%) of clay was incorporated to YSZ. Predetermined amounts of clay and YSZ were mixed and pressed uniaxially at 15 MPa into compacts that were subsequently pressureless sintered at 1450 °C. Dens...
Synthesis and characterization of nickel based bulk amkorphous alloys
Arslan, Hülya; Mekhrabov, Amdulla O.; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2004)
The aim of this study is to synthesize and characterize new bulk amorphous alloys in the Ni- based systems. Theoretical studies on the basis of semi-empirical rules and the electronic theory of alloys in pseudopotential approximation has been provided in order to predict the impurity elements that will lead to an increase in the glass forming ability of Ni-based alloy systems. Glass forming ability of ten different compositions of alloys of Ni-Nb, Ni-Fe, Ni-B, Ni-Hf and Ni-Cr was simulated by using FORTRAN ...
Anodization of 316L stainless steel for implant applications
Erdoğan, Yaşar Kemal; Ercan, Batur (2021-06-10)
316L stainless steel (SS) surfaces were modified via anodization to form nanopit structures with aim of improving its corrosion resistance, bone cell adhesion, proliferation and enhance its bioactivity. Surface characterization studies revealed that nanopit structures were composed of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3. The in vitro results showed that nanopit surfaces enhanced bone cell proliferation. Thus, we concluded that fabrication of nanostructures on 316L SS surfaces is a promising way to enhance bone cell functions f...
