The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus: status, biology, threats, and conservation priorities
Karamanlidis, Alexandros A.; Dendrinos, Panagiotis; De Larrinoa, Pablo Fernandez; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Johnson, William M.; Kirac, Cem O.; Pires, Rosa (2016-04-01)
The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus is the most endangered seal species. In this review we summarize the status, ecology, and behaviour of the Mediterranean monk seal, and identify the main threats that currently affect the species and the conservation priorities for securing its survival. Once abundant throughout the Black Sea and Mediterranean, as well as off the Atlantic coasts of northwestern Africa and Macaronesia, the Mediterranean monk seal has recently suffered dramatic declines, both in a...
The purple gallinule, porphyrio porphyrio, in the eastern mediterranean
Kasparek, Max; Bilgin, Cemal Can; Akin, Aydin (Informa UK Limited, 1989-01-01)
The decrease of the East Mediterranean population of the Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio porphyrio, since the last century, perhaps even since classical antiquity, is described. The only locality where the ssp. seistanicus is known to breed in the Mediterranean is the Göksu delta in Turkey (< 30 pairs) for which urgent conservation measures are recommended.
The Comb Jelly Mnemiopsis Leidyi in the Black Sea
Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2002-01-01)
Following its transportation in ballast waters, the western Atlantic ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi caused a striking damage to the ecosystem of the Black Sea in the early 1990s. The concentration of food Zooplankton and simultaneously catches of anchovy and other pelagic fishes sharply decreased during the peak levels of the ctenophore. There have been many studies on the distribution and physiology of this ctenophore in its new environment due to its substantial impact on the marine ecosystem. Later in mid ...
The wildcat Felis silvestris in northern Turkey: assessment of status using camera trapping
Can, Ozgun Emre; KANDEMİR, İRFAN; Togan, İnci Zehra (2011-01-01)
The wildcat Felts silvestris is a protected species in Turkey but the lack of information on its status is an obstacle to conservation initiatives. To assess the status of the species we interviewed local forestry and wildlife personnel and conducted field surveys in selected sites in northern, eastern and western Turkey during 2000-2007. In January-May 2006 we surveyed for the wildcat using 16 passive infrared-trigged camera traps in Yaylacik Research Forest, a 50-km(2) forest patch in Yenice Forest in nor...
