The Role of hydraulic loading and nutrients in the ecology of mediterranean shallow lakes
Coppens, Jan Emma Pieter; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Jeppesen, Erik; Department of Biology (2016)
In this Ph.D.-research three approaches were used to study the relationship between external nutrient loading, hydraulic loading and in-lake nutrient processes in shallow lakes under different climate conditions: a space-for-time mesocosm experiment on a climate gradient across Europe; time series analysis of long-term water and nutrient budgets of Lakes Eymir and Mogan; a combination of catchment and lake modelling of Lake Mogan under the projected climate conditions for 2020-2090. The mesocosm experiments...
The role of small heat shock proteins of the thermoacidophilic archaeon thermoplasma volcanium in the stress response
Aygar, Sema; Kocabıyık, Semra; Department of Biological Sciences (2011)
In this study, possible involvement of the small heat shock proteins (sHsps) from a thermoacidophilic archaeon, Thermoplasma (Tp) volcanium in the stress response was investigated. Our results showed that heterologous, high level expression of TVN0775/sHsp gene in E.coli increased its thermotolerance at 53°C for two hours. But, the second sHsp of the Tp. volcanium, TVN0984/sHsp was not effective in improvement of the thermal resistance of the mesophilic bacterium (i. e., E.coli). The expression of the TVN07...
The role of submerged macrophytes in stabilising water clarity and the migration pattern of dominant zooplankton in Lake Eymir, Turkey
Sillah, Mohamed; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Department of Biology (2002)
In this study, samplings within macrophyte beds and open water stations to determine the role of submerged macrophytes in stabilising water clarity and the migration pattern of dominant zooplankton from different habitats in Lake Eymir were carried out. The concentrations of nutrients and suspended solids (SS) were lower within the macrophyte beds than in the open water, while the water clarity was higher within the macrophyte beds than in the open water. The macrophyte beds stabilised the water clarity by ...
The role of mesoscale processes controlling biological variability in the Black Sea coastal waters: inferences from SeaWIFS-derived surface chlorophyll field
Oguz, T; Deshpande, AG; Malanotte-Rizzoli, P (Elsevier BV, 2002-06-01)
Several different time series of chlorophyll images from the 1997-2000 Seaviewing, Wide Field-of-view Sensor data set have been analysed to gain a perspective on the dynamical and biological variability in the Black Sea, particularly oil its northwestern shelf region and along the Anatolian coastal zone. The images are interpreted in terms of documenting the close link between biological production and physical dynamics of the boundary system, and of emphasizing the role of eddy processes on controlling mes...
