As ground motion observations over long enough time periods are unavailable for majority of sites, most of the ground motion prediction equations have been derived using observed data from multiple stations and seismic sources, and standard deviations (sigmas) of these equations are related to the statistics of the spatial variability of ground motion instead of temporal variability at a single site (ergodic assumption). This is one of the major shortcomings of carrying out site specific seismic hazard assessment with currently available ground motion prediction equations. In this study, we explore the variability at single sites within Turkey, decomposing sigma into different components so that the various contributions to the variability can be identified. The period and magnitude dependent standard deviation values obtained for Turkey using the ergodic assumption is changing between 0.56-0.82 in units [1]. When single stations are considered instead, standard deviation estimates are reduced by 20%. Through the restriction of the analysis to a particular seismic source (i.e. North Anatolian Fault zone), the standard deviation values obtained for Turkey by [1] are further shown to reduce by about 10-20% depending on the spectral period under consideration. Implications of these findings for the seismic hazard of Istanbul district are further discussed within the scope of this study.

Elliptical Pin Fins as an Alternative to Circular Pin Fins for Gas Turbine Blade Cooling Applications Part 2 Wake Flow Field Measurements and Visualization Using Particle Image Velocimetry
Uzol, Oğuz (null; 2001-06-07)
Extensive wake flow field measurements and visualizations are conducted using particle image velocimetry (PIV) inside the wakes of the elliptical and circular pin fin arrays in order to better understand the flow physics and the loss mechanisms of these devices. The true-mean velocity field inside the wake two diameters downstream of the pin fin arrays is obtained by collecting and ensemble averaging a large number of PIV samples in the midplane of the test section. Additional experiments are also conducted...
Broadband Ground Motion Simulation Within the City of Düzce (Turkey) and Building Response Simulation
Ozmen, Ekin; Karim Zadeh Naghshineh, Shaghayegh; Askan, Aysegul (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-05-01)
In areas with significant seismic activity and insufficient seismic networks, simulated ground motions are required for both seismic hazard and engineering analyses. One important task is evaluating the efficiency of the simulated records in building response estimation. In this study, a hybrid ground motion simulation framework is presented to obtain broadband ground motion time histories of a past major earthquake in Düzce (Turkey). The hybrid ground motion simulation framework presented herein is a combi...
Derivation of analytical fragility curves using SDOF models of masonry structures in Erzincan (Turkey)

Seismic loss estimation studies require fragility curves which are usually derived using ground motion datasets. Ground motion records can be either in the form of recorded or simulated time histories compatible with regional seismicity. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the use of alternative ground motion datasets (simulated and real) on the fragility curves. Simulated dataset is prepared considering regional seismicity parameters corresponding to Erzincan using the stochastic finite-fault ...
Spatial sensitivity of seismic hazard results to different background seismic activity and temporal earthquake occurrence models
Yilmaz, Nazan; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih (Elsevier BV, 2011-07-01)
Spatial sensitivity of seismic hazard results to different models with respect to background seismic activity and earthquake occurrence in time is investigated. For the contribution of background seismic activity to seismic hazard, background area source with uniform seismicity and spatially smoothed seismicity models are taken into consideration. For the contribution of faults, through characteristic earthquakes, both the memoryless Poisson and the time dependent renewal models are utilized. A case study, ...
3d modeling and ground motion scaling for the prediction of seismic demands on the gravity dams
Bybordiani, Milad; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Seismic behavior of gravity dams has long been evaluated using the classical two dimensional modeling approach and time history analyses the assumptions for which have been rarely challenged. Formulated for the gravity dams built in wide-canyons, 2D modeling is utilized extensively for almost all concrete dams due to the established procedures as well as the expected computational costs of a three dimensional model. However, a significant number of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams, characterized as such...
