This study presents a µ-synthesis active vibration control technique applied to the sinusoidally forced vibrations of a smart fin. The smart fin consists of a cantilever aluminum passive plate-like structure with surface bonded piezoelectric (PZT, LeadZirconate-Titanate) patches. The study presents the design of controllers via µsynthesis, which effectively suppress the vibrations of the smart fin due to its first flexural and first torsional modes. Two different experimental set-ups are used in the study. ...
Application of microbial enhanced oil recovery technique to a Turkish heavy oil
Behlülgil, Ahmet Kemal; DÖNMEZ, SEDAT (1992-03-01)
Microbial enhance oil recovery utilizes microorganisms and their metabolic products to improve the recovery of crude oil from reservoir rocks. In this study an anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium acetobutylicum was injected into a one-dimensional model reservoir containing a Turkish heavy oil (Raman oil) at 38° C. This injection was followed by water flooding after a suitable shut-in period. Comparison of oil recovery results of pure water flooding runs with experiments in which bacterial concentration and shu...
Application of Nanoparticle Antioxidants to Enable Hyperstable Chloroplasts for Solar Energy Harvesting
Boghossian, Ardemis A.; Sen, Fatih; Gibbons, Brenna M.; Sen, Selda; Faltermeier, Sean M.; Giraldo, Juan Pablo; Zhang, Cathy T.; Zhang, Jingqing; Heller, Daniel A.; Strano, Michael S. (Wiley, 2013-07-01)
The chloroplast contains densely stacked arrays of light-harvesting proteins that harness solar energy with theoretical maximum glucose conversion efficiencies approaching 12%. Few studies have explored isolated chloroplasts as a renewable, abundant, and low cost source for solar energy harvesting. One impediment is that photoactive proteins within the chloroplast become photodamaged due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In vivo, chloroplasts reduce photodegradation by applying a self-repair cycl...
Application of structural modification method to nonlinear vibration analysis of bladed disks
Şayin, Burcu; Ciğeroğlu, Ender; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2013)
High cycle fatigue failure of turbine blades is one of the most important problems in the design of gas turbine engines; hence, bladed-disk assemblies have been studied extensively for more than half a century. Damping design becomes an important issue in order to attenuate the blade vibration. For bladed-disk systems, friction damping concept is a common strategy to decrease vibration levels. There are different strategies in order to add friction damping to the system: blade-to-blade dampers such as shrou...
Application of vapex (vapour extraction) process on carbonate reservoirs
Yıldırım, Yakut; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2003)
The vapour extraction process, or ءVAPEX̕ has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years as a new method of heavy oil or bitumen recovery. The VAPEX (vapour extraction) can be visualized as energy efficient recovery process for unlocking the potential of high viscosity resources trapped in bituminous and heavy oil reservoirs. A total of 20 VAPEX experiments performed with Hele-Shaw cell utilizing three different Turkish crude oils. Two different VAPEX solvents (propane and butane) were used with th...
