Modeling and Experimental Validation of Critical Distance and the Maximum Depth of Galvanic Corrosion-Induced Pitting on the 2024-T3 with CFRP JointMustafa Anıl Yıldırım1, Metehan Erdogan2 and Ishak Karakaya1 Published 1 May 2020 • © 2020 ECS - The Electrochemical Society ECS Meeting Abstracts, Volume MA2020-01, C01: Corrosion General Session DOI https://doi.org/10.1149/MA2020-01141014mtgabsAbstract For today's aviation industry, reducing fuel consumption in aircrafts has become one of the most important goals. Therefore, the use of lightweight materials, such as CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic), aluminum, magnesium, or titanium has increased. Different combinations of materials that may be electrically in contact with each other in the presence of moisture cause galvanic corrosion. Especially, pits caused by galvanic corrosion jeopardize the structural strength of an aircraft. Within the scope of this work, an experimental setup was developed for the validation of a finite element model (FEM) for simulating galvanic corrosion of 2024-T3 sheet and CFRP in a 5 wt% NaCl solution. Corrosion parameters of both materials were determined separately by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. The critical distance for galvanic corrosion-induced pitting on the aluminum alloy surface and the maximum pit depth were determined by FEM and confirmed by immersion tests in the same environment.

Modelling and Control of 3D Flapping Flight
Çalış, Özgün; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Arıkan, Kutluk Bilge; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-2)
This thesis presents aerodynamic modelling, dynamical modelling and control studies on a flapping-wing micro air vehicle flight. The wing morphology and kinematics of nature flyers are investigated, and an aerodynamic model is created based on quasi-steady estimations and blade element theory. The model in question calculates the aerodynamic forces and pitching moment created by the flapping motion in a much shorter time than the alternating techniques, making it usable during control simulations. This mode...
Investigation of rotor wake interactions in helicopters using 3d unsteady free vortex wake methodology
Yemenici, Öznur; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2010)
This thesis focuses on developing and examining the capabilities of a new in-house aerodynamic analysis tool, AeroSIM+, and investigating rotor-rotor aerodynamic interactions for two helicopters, one behind the other in forward flight. AeroSIM+ is a 3-D unsteady vortex panel method potential flow solver based on a free vortex wake methodology. Validation of the results with the experimental data is performed using the Caradonna-Tung hovering rotor test case. AeroSIM+ code is improved for forward flight cond...
Development of a bridge management system incorporating a newly developed model for element condition evaluation based on damage effects
Akgül, Ferhat (2013-12-01)
This article presents a comprehensive research project undertaken for the development of a bridge management system (BMS) for the General Directorate of Highways in Turkey, establishment of a prototype inspection program and the development of a new model, implemented within the BMS, for element condition state evaluation based on element damage types. As an introduction, a summary of the BMS development process is presented. Then, a detailed explanation of the newly developed model for element condition ev...
Modeling anaerobic dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls
Demirtepe, Hale; İmamoğlu, İpek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2012)
This study aims to investigate the fate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments via using an anaerobic dechlorination model (ADM). PCBs are ubiquitous environmental pollutants, accumulated mostly in aquatic sediments. Significant attention was placed on the anaerobic dechlorination of PCBs since this process leads to the conversion of highly-chlorinated biphenyls to lower chlorinated ones, resulting in less toxic and more biodegradable congeners. An ADM was developed previously for the identificati...
Analytical modeling of asymmetric multi-segment rotor - bearing systems with Timoshenko beam model including gyroscopic moments
Özşahin, Orkun; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat (2014-11-01)
In this study, analytical modeling and an analysis approach for asymmetric multi-segment rotor bearing systems are presented. Timoshenko beam model which includes the effect of gyroscopic moments is employed for modeling rotor segments. Instead of applying FEM, sub-segment Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) are obtained analytically, and sub-segment FRFs obtained are coupled by using receptance coupling method. Bearing properties are included into system dynamics by employing structural modification techni...
