Non-fickian moisture absorption in polymers coated with a thin nanocomposite layer
Altan, Altan; Altan, M. Cengiz; Guloglu, GÖRKEM EĞEMEN; Güloğlu, Görkem Eğemen (2014-01-01)
Moisture absorption in polymers and polymeric composites is well known to lead to significant degradation in mechanical properties. Most epoxy based composites may absorb 2 to 5 wt.% moisture when they are subjected to humid environments. Moisture absorption in polymers has been often characterized with Fickian or various non-Fickian models to describe the time-dependent absorption phenomena. Previous experiments have shown that dispersing moderate amounts of nanoclay in an epoxy resin can: (i) reduce the t...
Non-Markovian diffusion over a parabolic potential barrier: Influence of the friction-memory function
YILMAZ, BÜLENT; Ayik, S.; Abe, Y.; Boilley, D. (American Physical Society (APS), 2008-01-01)
The over-passing probability across an inverted parabolic potential barrier is investigated according to the classical and quantal generalized Langevin equations. It is shown that, in the classical case, the asymptotic value of the over-passing probability is determined by a single dominant root of the "characteristic function," and it is given by a simple expression. The expression for the over-passing probability is quite general, and details of dissipation mechanism and memory effects enter into the expr...
Non-destructive patterning of 10nm magnetic island array by phase transformation with low-energy proton irradiation
Dutta, Tanmay; PATHAK, Sachin; ASBAHİ, Mohamed; Celik, Kubra; Lee, Jong Min; Yang, Ping; Saifullah, M. S. M.; Oral, Ahmet; Bhatia, C. S.; CHA, Jongin; HONG, Jongill; Yang, Hyunsoo (2017-10-09)
Nano-patterning on the order of sub-10 nm is integral to achieve high-density nano-scale devices for various data storage and data processing applications. However, the additional requirement of planarization and unwanted side-effects of physical or chemical etching have so far limited the patterning of sub-10nm devices. In this work, we have demonstrated the creation of an array of similar to 10nm ferromagnetic islands through selective phase transformation of paramagnetic multilayers by low-energy proton ...

Non-sinusoidal path optimization of dual airfoils flapping in a biplane configuration
KAYA, MUHAMMED ÇAĞRI; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (2009-10-12)
The path of dual airfoils in a biplane configuration undergoing a combined, non-sinusoidal pitching and plunging motion is optimized for maximum thrust and/or propulsive efficiency. The non-sinusoidal, periodic flapping motion is described using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). A gradient based algorithm is then employed for the optimization of the NURBS parameters. Unsteady, low speed laminar flows are computed using a Navier-Stokes solver in a parallel computing environment based on domain decompos...
