As a model surface, graphite slides were treated by pure nitrogen gas plasma for different periods (15 sec - 5 min). These samples were kept in air or under argon atmosphere in sealed holders. STM images were obtained at constant current mode. Results showed that both the number and the size of clusters formed by plasma deposition increased with exposure time.

SILICONE POLYMERIZATION BY GLOW-DISCHARGE APPLICATION
Hasırcı, Nesrin (1987-08-20)
Polymerization of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) on aluminum by application of capacitively coupled plasma was carried out under different polymerization conditions. The effect of applied frequency, power, and discharge duration on polymerization rate was investigated. Film adhesion was found to be directly related to applied frequency and power. Polymer deposits were examined with SEM and ATR, and the effect of the coat on wattability was sought by measuring the contact angles. The chemical structure of the c...
Experimental investigation of the failure of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings
Kütükoğlu, Başar; Çöker, Demirkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, an experimental method is developed to determine the interfacial fracture toughness of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings. The thesis is composed of three major parts. In the first part, nanoindentation is used to measure the elastic modulus and hardness of the APS TBC specimens composed of three major layers: Inconel 718 substrate, NiCrAlY based metallic bond coat (BC) and YSZ based ceramic top coat (TC). Microscopy, XRD and EDS are used for metallurgical characterization. In the s...
Gold deposition on GaAs(001) surfaces: Molecular-dynamics simulations
Erkoç, Şakir; Amirouche, L; Rouaiguia, L (2002-07-01)
We have simulated the gold deposition on arsenic and gallium terminated GaAs(001) surfaces at low and room temperatures. It has been found that gallium terminated surface is relatively less stable in comparison to the arsenic terminated surface. On the other hand, a single gold adatom on the surface has different characteristics than full coverage gold atoms on the surface; a single gold atom diffuses into the surface at room temperature. Simulations have been performed by considering classical molecular-dy...
Oxygen adsorption on Pt/TiO2 catalysts
Üner, Deniz; Ozen, I; Uner, M (Elsevier BV, 2003-09-30)
Oxygen adsorption overPt/TiO2 surfaces were investigated as a function of metal loading. Oxygen adsorption over pure TiO2 was molecular at all pressure ranges investigated. On the other hand, differential heats of adsorption measured by adsorption calorimetry indicated that oxygen adsorption was dissociative over Pt/TiO2 surfaces until the Pt surface was saturated with oxygen. The saturation coverage of atomic oxygen on Pt was determined as approximately one from adsorption calorimetry. The initial heat of ...
DSC study of the combustion properties of turkish coals
Ozbas, K.E.; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Hicyilmaz, C. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2003-01-01)
In this research, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine the combustion behavior and kinetic analysis of raw and cleaned coal samples of different size fractions. DSC curves of the three coal samples (Soma, Tuncbilek and Afsin Elbistan) showed two reaction regions. The first reaction region was due to moisture loss (endothermic) and observed in the temperature range of ambient to 150°C. The second region was the exothermic region due to the combustion and observed in the temperature r...
