The effects of volatility on growth and financial development through capital market imperfections
Aysan , Ahmet Faruk (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2007-6-1)
This paper provides a model to account for the empirical evidence that volatility reduces growth. In the model, greater volatility increases the cost associated with capital market imperfections and induces the financial intermediaries to charge higher interest rates. The model is based on one of overlapping generations with two types of technologies. The more productive technology requires fixed investment in the first period. Individual with income less than the amount of fixed investment may borrow in fi...
The Asymmetric Impact of Funding Liquidity Risk on the Volatility of Stock Portfolios during the COVID-19 Crisis
Kocaarslan, Barış; Soytas, Ugur (2021-02-01)
In this study, we identify economic transmission channels through which changes in funding liquidity conditions in interbank markets asymmetrically affect volatilities of stock portfolios during the COVID-19 crisis. For the purpose of this study, the quantile regression approach is utilized. Controlling for macroeconomic factors, we document that volatilities of high-risk portfolios increase more in response to a deterioration in funding liquidity conditions compared to less risky portfolios. More important...
The effects of calculator based laboratories (cbl) on graphical interpretation of kinematic concepts in physics at Metu teacher candidates
Ersoy, Ahmet Fatih; Sancar, Mehmet Tevfik; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
Science education should teach students to critically evaluate new information. Students have difficulties making connections among graphs of variables, physical concepts and the real world and often perceive graphs as a picture. Calculator Based Laboratories (CBL) provide immediately available calculator drawn graphics of objects in motion. Up to date effectiveness of microcomputers are evaluated but there are few studies on the use of CBL, which are feasible, easy to use, portable and cheap with respect t...
The effects of aquifer heterogeneity on the natural attenuation rates of chlorinated solvents
Önkal, Başak; Ünlü, Kahraman; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Monitored natural attenuation has been particularly used at sites where petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents have contaminated soil and groundwater. One of the important aspects of the methodology that has been recognized recently is that the mass removal rates, the most important parameter to determine effectiveness of the methodology, is controlled by the groundwater flow regime and the aquifer heterogeneity. Considering this recognition, the primary objective of this study is to quantitatively...
The effects of outside options on optimal auction outcomes
Küçükşenel, Serkan (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2013-4-1)
In this paper, we study the seller-optimal auctions for auction design environments with pure informational externalities, and investigate the effects of outside options on auction outcomes. If the seller's outside option is endogenous and depends on the information structure of the market, we show that the seller sells the good more often as the auction design environment merges into the standard private-value auction setting. If the seller's outside option does not depend on the information structure of t...
