Design and construction of a sampling system that can collect PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 samples simultaneously from atmosphere
Ateş, Ömer; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
In this study, a particulate matter (PM) sampling system that can collect PM10 (particulate matter with diameter of less than 10 μm), PM2.5 and PM1 samples simultaneously with a single pump on separate filters was constructed and validated. The sampler consisted of a F&J Specialty DF-1E carbon vane vacuum pump, with a flowrate of 115 L/min, and 3 channels connected to the pump through a manifold. Each channel had a cyclone, a filter holder of 47 mm diameter, a micro-orifice (critical orifice) for velocity c...

Reconstruction of atmospheric flows based on proper orthogonal decomposition method

The placement of wind turbines in a wind farm, which is called micro-siting, is a crucial task in regard to the maximization of the energy production in a wind farm. The maximum energy production is only possible if all the wind turbines are placed in optimum locations. Although the micro-siting of wind turbines has many aspects to be considered such as wind field analysis, wake effect of the other turbines and accessibility, the wind speed is the most significant parameter. The statistical wind speed distr...
CFD simulation of the developing boundary layer in an atmospheric wind tunnel

Structural coupling methods are widely used in predicting dynamics of coupled systems. In this study, the reverse problem, i.e. predicting the dynamic behavior of a particular subsystem from the knowledge of the dynamics of the overall system and of all the other subsystems, is studied. This problem arises when a substructure cannot be measured separately, but only when coupled to neighboring substructures. The dynamic decoupling problem of coupled linear structures is well investigated in literature. Howev...
Investigation of passive sampling of no2 and o3 in ambient air and determination of the effects of meteorological parameters to the uptake rate
Bayındır, Elif; Tuncel, Semra G.; Department of Chemistry (2008)
In this study NO2 and O3 gases which are the secondary pollutants in ambient air were sampled with designed passive tubes. The collected samples were extracted for UV-VIS spectrometric analysis. NO2 gases were converted to NO2- ions by extracting with water and then this solution was colored with Saltzman reagent (5:1 sulfanilamide and N-(1 naphthly)-ethlyene-diamine dihydrochloride). Then the absorbance of the solution was measured at 537 nm. O3 was extracted with 3-metyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrozone hydr...
