Most of the available microvalves include complicated fabrication steps and multiple materials. We present a microvalve which is inspired from macroplug valves. The plug microvalve is fabricated by boring a hole through a rigid cylindrical rod and inserting it through a microfluidic chip. It simply functions by rotating the rod which aligns or misaligns the valve port with the microchannel. The rod is made up of a rigid material for applying the valve to an elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannel. The valve can also be used for a rigid channel by inserting the rod into an elastic tubing. Therefore, the presented microvalve can be used for both elastomeric and thermoplastic channels. The plug microvalve can be applied to a prefabricated microchannel and does not require modification of the mold design. We have verified the repeatability and robustness of the valve by repetitive operation cycles using a servo motor. The plug microvalve is adaptable to numerous microfluidic applications. We have shown three modes of operation for the microvalve including fluid flow control across multiple intersecting channels. Integrating the microvalve to some commonly used microfluidic designs, we demonstrated the versatility and the practicality of the microvalve for controlling flow focusing, microdroplet sorting and rapid chemical agent detection. This low-cost microvalve significantly minimizes the prototyping time for microfluidic systems. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A data-informatics method to quantitatively represent ternary eutectic microstructures
Sargın, Irmak; Beckman, Scott P. (2019-02-01)
Many of the useful properties of modern engineering materials are determined by the material's microstructure. Controlling the microstructure requires an understanding of the complex dynamics underlying its evolution during processing. Investigating the thermal and mass transport phenomena responsible for a structure requires establishing a common language to quantitatively represent the microstructures being examined. Although such a common language exists for some of the simple structures, which has allow...
A 5-Parameter Isothermal Creep Model For Polymeric Liners
Güner, Doğukan; Öztürk, Hasan (null; 2019-07-12)
Polymeric materials are commonly used as load-carrying components in different structural applications due to the ease of manufacture, installation and long lifetime properties. In civil and mining engineering applications, fast-setting thin polymeric liners are in demand as areal support elements in underground openings. The stability of the openings is maintained by polymeric liners that might sustain the constant loads due to the presence of wedge blocks. Therefore, their time-dependent mechanical respo...
A NOVEL FORCE MICROSCOPE AND POINT-CONTACT PROBE
JARVİS, S P; Oral, Ahmet; WEİHS, T P; PETHİCA, J B (1993-12-01)
The mechanical properties of very small volumes of material can vary greatly from bulk properties. These modified properties are of interest in many areas including the operation of atomic force microscopy (AFM), the study of adhesion and fracture, and the evaluation of electrical contact response. Despite the importance of these properties, AFM has not yet been successfully utilized for their investigation. Most existing AFMs still rely on the control and monitoring of displacements, with forces being infe...
A web based multi-user framework for the design and detailing of reinforced concrete frames-columns
Ünal, Gökhan; Kurç, Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
In design and detailing of a reinforced concrete frame project, there are many engineers who contribute a single project. Wide variety of information is exchanged between these engineers in design and detailing stages. If the coordination between engineers is not performed sufficiently, data exchange may result in loss of important information that may cause inadequate design and detailing of a structure. Thus, a data model developed for different stages of design and detailing of reinforced concrete struct...
A new soluble neutral state black electrochromic copolymer via a donor-acceptor approach
Icli, Merve; Pamuk, Melek; Algi, Fatih; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; CİHANER, ATİLLA (Elsevier BV, 2010-07-01)
Two donor-acceptor systems, 2-decyl-4,7-bis(3,3-didecyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepin-6-yl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole (1) and 4,7-bis(3,3-didecyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepin-6-yl)-2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole (2) are explored in order to attain a low bandgap black polymer electrochrome, which is highly difficult to attain due to the complexity of designing such materials. Electrochemical polymerization of 1 and 2 in 1:4 monomer feed ratio was performed in a mixture of acetonitrile and...
