Simulation of dynamic crack growth using the generalized interpolation material point (GIMP) method
Daphalapurkar, Nitin P.; Lu, Hongbing; Çöker, Demirkan; Komanduri, Ranga (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-01-01)
Dynamic crack growth is simulated by implementing a cohesive zone model in the generalized interpolation material point (GIMP) method. Multiple velocity fields are used in GIMP to enable handling of discrete discontinuity on either side of the interface. Multilevel refinement is adopted in the region around the crack-tip to resolve higher strain gradients. Numerical simulations of crack growth in a homogeneous elastic solid under mode-II plane strain conditions are conducted with the crack propagating along...
Simulation of circulating fluidized bed combustors
Göğebakan, Yusuf; Selçuk, Nevin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2006)
A dynamic mathematical model for simulation of atmospheric circulating fluidized bed combustors has been developed on the basis of first principles and empirical correlations. The model accounts for dense and dilute zone hydrodynamics, volatiles release and combustion, char particles combustion and their size distribution, and heat transfer from/to gas, particles, waterwalls and refractory. Inputs to the model include configuration and dimensions of the combustor and its internals, air and coal flows, coal ...
Simulation of low cycle fatigue performance of steel H piles via finite element approach
Karalar, Memduh; Dicleli, Murat (2016-06-30)
Integral bridges are jointless bridges where the superstructure is connected monolithically with the abutments. Due to seasonal temperature changes the abutments are pushed against the approach fill and then pulled away, causing lateral displacements at the top of the piles that support the abutments as shown in Fig. 1. This may result in the reduction of their service life due to low-cycle fatigue effects. Although bridge engineers (Dicleli, 2000, French et al. 2004) have already predicted that low cycle f...
SIMULATION OF 2-D FLOWS OVER STATIONARY AND MOVING BOUNDARIES BY DISCRETE VORTEX METHOD
KARIMIZINDASHTI, Golnesa; KURÇ, Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-8-23)
A Discrete-Vortex Method (DVM)-based in-house code is developed and implemented to simulate two-dimensional low to medium-Reynolds number flows around circular and square cylinders undergoing either prescribed or free motions. To simulate the vorticity gradient, three different diffusion schemes, Random Walk, Particle Strength Exchange, and Vorticity Redistribution methods, are utilized. The performance of these diffusion schemes is examined by conducting simulations of flow passing over a stationary square...
