Postural Control Strategies Enlightened by the Usage of Tendon Vibration Technique

2009-01-01
Postural control strategies applied by a subject in two different physical environments (phy env) were explored by using tendon vibration technique. EMG data from left and right Tibialis Anterior and Gastrocnemius muscles have been received from a subject while standing still on a force platform in two different conditions (eyes open and closed) during 180 see long trials at the phy env's created. The subject received two 10 see long 80 Hz vibrations applied to left and right Achilles tendon at 50(th) and 120(th) sees of the data collection. It has been observed that the subject experienced a motion illusion in the condition where his feel bore his total body weight with eyes closed (phy env I), which has been revealed through the analyses of Center-of-Pressure (CoP(x)) and EMG data. However, when 7% of his body weight was suspended to the ceiling through a harness (phy env 11) the illusion disappeared and the variability in the CoP(x) signal decreased.

Washout filter based control for the Hodgkin-Huxley nerve cell dynamics
Doruk, Resat Oezguer (2010-01-01)
In this work we present a washout filler based control approach for stabilizing the oscillations in Hodgkin-Huxley type neurons. The oscillations occur due to the bifurcations that arise from the potassium and sodium channel conductance deviations. The MATCONT toolbox software environment was used for analysis of the bifurcation points in conjunction with MATLAB. The simulations of the Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model at those points are provided to validate the results obtained from, the MATCONT software. Then a ...
Postural responses of patients with bilateral vestibular loss and healthy subjects to sinusoidal tilts
İmir, Mehmet; Gürses, Senih; Department of Engineering Sciences (2017)
Posture control to maintain the stability of upright posture is a very complex task. It requires sensorimotor integration of all sense organs. If one of these organs loses its functionality, the person may have difficulties in maintaining postural balance. This study examines the difference in postural responses of patients with bilateral vestibular loss and healthy subjects to sinusoidal tilts. It has shown that center of mass(CoM) motions of control and patient groups were similar respect to space coordin...
Active vibration suppression of a flexible beam via sliding mode and H ∞ control
Itik, Mehmet; Salamci, Metin U.; Demet Ulker, F.; Yaman, Yavuz (2005-12-01)
n this study, sliding mode and H. control techniques are applied to a flexible beam in order to suppress some of the vibration modes. The beam is a clamped-free flexible structure having piezoelectric (PZT) patches as actuators and a laser displacement sensor for measuring the tip point deflection. The beam is modeled in two different ways for each control algorithm. To implement sliding mode control (SMC), Euler-Bernoulli beam model is used and a finite dimensional LTI model is formed by using assumed mode...
Microstructure evolution in plasticity
Yalçınkaya, Tuncay (null; 2016-08-21)
Deformation of polycrystalline metallic materials induces intrinsic formation and evolution of various types of microstructures at different length scales due to different underlying physical mechanisms affecting the plasticity, damage and fracture behavior. At nanomicro scale metals under irradiation develop certain zones free from irradiation and localization occurs in these areas as so-called clear bands affecting the ductility and the failure of the material. At meso scale dislocations form various disl...
Platform motion disturbances decoupling by means of inertial sensors for a motion stabilized gimbal
Mutlu, Deniz; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Platin, Bülent Emre; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2015)
In this study, a method is developed to overcome platform motion based disturbances resulting from kinematic and dynamic interactions between platform and gimbal system. The method is confined to using underlying non-linear relations in order to increase performance of the system in nearly all of its motion envelope. Sensor requirements and measurements methods are also stated for the developed method. In order to simulate real system conditions, an identification procedure is applied on the system whose ou...
