The aim of this thesis is to provide an exposition of the theory of trisections of smooth 4-manifolds which were introduced by David T. Gay and Robion Kirby in 2012. We survey the theory by highlighting its essential elements and try to provide insight by making analogies between trisections and Heegaard splittings. The thesis also discusses the classification of genus 1 trisections and describes algorithms for passing between a Kirby diagram and a trisection diagram of a manifold in detail. In addition, by presenting and using the algorithm introduced by N. Castro, D. T. Gay, and J. Pinzón-Caicedo, we produce a relative trisection for the Mazur manifold bounded by the Brieskorn sphere Σ(2, 5, 7).

Considering a Theory of Autopoietic Culture
Boyd, Scott H. (2011-01-01)
This article questions the predominance of pragmatism and fixed points of reference in academic paradigms regarding culture and proposes a theory of autopoietic culture based on a theory of living forms developed by the biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. The central part of the theory of autopoietic culture is that culture, something originating with humanity and reflected upon by the same, is an autonomous and autonomic unity that is a network of processes and production of components that ...
Hybrid wavelet-neural network models for time series data
Kılıç, Deniz Kenan; Uğur, Ömür; Department of Financial Mathematics (2021-3-3)
The thesis aims to combine wavelet theory with nonlinear models, particularly neural networks, to find an appropriate time series model structure. Data like financial time series are nonstationary, noisy, and chaotic. Therefore using wavelet analysis helps better modeling in the sense of both frequency and time. S&P500 (∧GSPC) and NASDAQ (∧ IXIC) data are divided into several components by using multiresolution analysis (MRA). Subsequently, each part is modeled by using a suitable neural network structure. ...
Stochastic Analysis of Human Postural Sway
Yaradanakul, Naci; Gürses, Senih; Department of Engineering Sciences (2022-9-2)
"The decisive step in the transition from ape to man", in other words, inherently unstable dynamics of human erect posture, is investigated throughout the thesis considering the random features with a spatiotemporal perspective employing stochastic dynamical system theory and statistical mechanics. During the investigation, mechanistic reasoning and control theory is not mentioned, but the complex dynamical output of four basic sensors somatosensory, vestibular, visual and proprioceptive, physicochemical ac...
Some remarks on vector-valued integration
Kadets, Vladimir; Shumyatskiy, Boris; Shvidkoy, Roman; Zheltukhın, Kostyantyn; Tseytlin, Leonid (2002-02-01)
The paper continues the study of the notion of Riemann–Lebesgue integral, which was introduced before by two of the authors. The result about the convexity of the limit set of integral sums is generalized to the case of weakly-compactly generated spaces. The notion of Riemann–Lebesgue integral is used to introduce new classes of Banach spaces. The properties of these new spaces are studied.
The Role of Metacognition in Facilitating Conceptual Change
Yürük, Nejla; Beeth, Michael E; Özdemir, Ömer Faruk (2003-03-31)
This paper describe the intertwined nature of metacognition and conceptual change and proposes a taxonomy that classifies the types of metacognitive knowledge and activities that are likely to influence the change in students' conceptions. The initial conceptual change model is introduced to provide background and context for the theoretical argument, and a summary of the other theoretical approaches is drawn to explain the change in students' conceptions. The definition of metacognition is presented along ...
