The development of electronic devices with higher performance in a smaller volume with advancing technology has increased the heat fluxes generated in the device. This problem has increased the use of passive cooling devices such as heat pipes, which contain liquid-gas equilibrium flow, have high heat transfer efficiency and do not require additional energy. Numerical modeling of the liquid-gas flow in such devices requires the determination of the liquid pressure directly related to the liquid geometry at the desired cross sections. In this thesis an interferometric measurement technique that can be used in measuring the profiles of thin liquid films encountered in grooved heat pipes is developed. The approach involves recording and analysis of the interferometric data obtained by passing a fiber optic probe over the liquid cross-section to determine the shape of the liquid-gas interface. This is achieved by simulating the propagation, reflection and refraction of the emitted laser beam through the test media and the interference with the reference beam to form the interference fringes, which is then compared to the experimentally observed counterpart to calculate the liquid shape. The experimental method followed to determine the liquid film profile, the details of the software used to generate the simulation data and the criteria used to determine the level of agreement between the experimental and simulated data are explained.
