Symbols with their meanings have always been one of the vital and primal communication tools in humans' perception of the universe. Symbolic expressions are important means of representation of abstract ideas that go beyond the concrete physical forms. Accordingly, it’s not just about physical material of architecture that provide mere shelter; it’s about symbolic meanings of architecture that are concealed behind its concrete forms. Metaphors, on the other hand, in art and architecture are the vehicles that help the realisation of the expression of ideas through the symbolic presentations of physical forms. There is a need to disclose the very meanings of symbolic expressions of architectural forms (via metaphors) for better understanding of their historical and cultural reasonings. This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between metaphorical connotations and symbolic forms in architecture. Metaphors, by this way, act to decipher inherited historical-cultural meanings of a space/form that are hidden in the figurative forms of buildings. Panofsky’s iconographical reading in deeper sense is the methodology of the thesis in de-mythification of the selected architectural symbolic form. The thesis considers Qabus Tower (1006/7 AD in north region of Iran) as the pivot point to scan the possible metaphorical connotations of the period. Cryptic historical and cultural meanings behind the concrete form of Qabus Tower require an iconographical reading in a deeper sense order to de-mythify its becoming reasonings. Political, cultural, religious, (Mithraism, Zoroastrianism, and Islam), as well as mythological, ontological, philosophical, and cosmological knowledge of the different historical periods in Iran are the specific issues that are concerned in order to disclose symbolic significance of the tower and its concealed mystical and mythical intentions. In this thesis, it's claimed that Qabus Tower symbolically represents the political, cultural, religious and mythological worldview of the period that is derived from Islamic period, but deeply and mostly, the tower represents the worldview that is connected to the pre-Islamic historical-cultural period of the history of Iran.

When human constructs the physical surrounding, a psychological environment of meanings is being created, accompanying the world of shapes and masses. Interventions into built environment affect the meanings extracted from the composition of the physical setting and the response of people to design strategies reveals the importance of them. The entrance spine of a city is important in creating an image of the city in the minds of the observers, and the protocol highway of Ankara introduces the city to other...
Perspective for the Reproduction of Architectural Space: ARCH524 as a Pretext

Discovery of the linear perspective of the Renaissance is momentous in terms of the appearance of a new “way of seeing” that is central to the “subject” and emergence of a “subjective” “way of representing” the world. With the assumption that “perspective” is a cultural constituent of the “Renaissance paradigm” that generates the representational notions of art and architecture, perspective is considered as a “convention” and a “mode of representation” that has been influential until the “paradigm shifts” i...
Re-thinking the limits of architecture through the avant-garde formations during the 1960s : projections and receptions in the context of Turkey

An inquiry into the voyage of avant-garde within the domains of art and architecture makes it evident that avant-garde is ambiguous in meaning as a word, a term, a phenomenon and a concept. This study aims to decipher avant-garde and to offer a map for its conceptualization in architecture. Taken not as a monolithic statement but as a unitary concept incorporating a number of subjects and formations for granted, in this study, architectural avant-garde is conceptualized as diverse expressions of activated e...

Technological innovations in the field of information and communication have transformed the nature of the spatial realm. The spatial realm has been engaged with the virtual realm, where a new approach has been mandatory for a possible and productive interrelation between the two. On the other hand, new technologies have affected architectural drafting, representation, construction and most significantly architectural design to generate remarkable conveniences and unnoticed interfaces for architects. New te...

The discovery of new geometries in the 19th century and the departure from an absolute to a relative understanding of space-time, together with the invention of higher dimensions have caused a shift towards the idealization of space. This new type of ideal space was called hyperspace. The counter-intuitive quality of hyperspace has opened up new formal possibilities and representation techniques in art and architecture. In a similar manner, with the introduction of computers, the virtual and immaterial qual...
