Kairapolitics: Spinozian Politics of Time

2020-01-01
Atmaca, Mustafa Caglar
In this study, Spinoza's philosophy is discussed on an ethical-political ground within the context of the temporality of the passions of fear and hope. In this respect, it has been claimed that fear and hope are, in the Spinozian sense, sorrowful attitudes and for this reason, they are enslaving passions, although hope is a joyful attitude. It has been tried to show that this condition is chronopathological that has its source essentially in chronological time. Then, within the framework of passions and temporality, it was tried to conceptualize a definition of politics, power and disobedience. In parallel with Spinoza's distinction between time and duration, it was tried to make a discussion on the politics of time through a distinction made in ancient Greece, chronos and kairos, which touches the distinction between time and duration from another point and to demonstrate its connections with Spinoza's philosophy.

The concept of experience is one of the fundamental subjects in the history of philosophy. In general, this significant concept is treated and presented in terms of the epistemological problems. Especially in modern philosophy, the concept of experience is limited by considering it only as ‘sense experience’. It is argued in this study, this limitation is caused by a conceptual distortion of modern philosophy, such as subjectivization and idealization. On the other hand, the naturalistic account presents an...

Durmuş, Sevde; Çırakman, Elif; Department of Philosophy (2018)
The primary purpose of this study is to read Hegel and Kierkegaard together by focusing on the relation of the themes of truth, selfhood and authorship. Starting with the exposition of Kierkegaard’s idea of “truth as subjectivity,” I will show how his understanding of truth is revealed throughout the journey of becoming a true self. Later, I will inquire Hegel’s understanding of truth by addressing a Kierkegaardian question regarding the place of selfhood in the search of truth. This question will direct me...
