The binary compounds (C(3)A: Ca3Al2O6, C(12)A(7): Ca12Al14O33, CA: CaAl2O4, CA(2): CaAl4O7 and CA(6): CaAl12O19) of CaO-Al2O3 system have been synthesized as high compound-purity ceramic powders by using the Combustion Synthesis (CS) method. Materials characterization of the above-mentioned phases were performed by powder XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDXS. It has hereby been shown that by using this synthesis procedure it would be possible to manufacture high-purity ceramic powders of CA, CA(2), and C(12)A(7) at 850 degrees C, and of C(3)A and CA(6) at 1050 degrees C in a stagnant air atmosphere.

Direct synthesis of hydrogen storage alloys from their oxides
Tan, Serdar; Öztürk, Tayfur; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study is the synthesis of hydrogen storage compounds by electrodeoxidation technique which offers an inexpensive and rapid route to synthesize compounds from oxide mixtures. Within the scope of this study, two hydrogen storage compounds, FeTi and Mg2Ni, are aimed to be produced by this technique. In the first part, effect of sintering conditions on synthesis of FeTi was studied. For this purpose, oxide pellets made out of Fe2O3-TiO2 powders were sintered at temperatures between 900 °C – 1300...
Use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in matrix solid phase dispersion extraction combined with gas chromatography
Njie, Njaw; Aygün, Rüveyde Sezer; Department of Chemistry (2008)
The use of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) as solid sorbent in Matrix Solid-Phase Dispersion (MSPD) extraction and preconcentration method was presented to determine some commonly used organophosphorus insecticides/OPIs in honey samples using a Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). OPIs are poisonous compounds used to kill insects and rodents by affecting their nervous system. The limit of detections obtained after MSPD extraction were 7.0 ng/g for Malathion, Malaoxon and Fenitrothion...
Hydrogen bonding in polyanilines
Bahçeci, S.; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yurtsever, E. (Elsevier BV, 1994-12)
Hydrogen bonding between poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) and polyaniline (PAn) is analyzed using semi-empirical quantum methodology. Fully optimized AM1 molecular orbital calculations are reported for various aniline structures (monomer, dimer and trimer), the monomer of the PC and the hydrogen-bonded model of PAn-PC oligomer.
Preparation of PLZT thin films by chemical solution deposition and their characterization
Kaplan, Burkan; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2005)
In this study, La3+ was substituted into lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system by Pb1-xLax(ZryTi1-y)1-x/4O3 nominal stochiometry and it was processed via chemical solution deposition on (111)-Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si-(100) substrate.PLZT solutions were prepared by mixing two solutions, one of which was obtained by dissolving lead acetate and lanthanum acetate hydrate in 2 methoxyethanol at high temperature. This solution was then mixed with the second solution containing zirconium propoxide and titanium isopropoxide. 4...
Ferroboron Production by Electrodeoxidation
Örs, Taylan; Öztürk, Tayfur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2008)
In this study ferroboron (Fe - 14 at %B) was synthesized in crystalline form (Fe + Fe2B) via electrodeoxidation. For this purpose, Fe2O3 and H3BO3 were mixed in suitable proportions via spex mill. The powder was cold pressed and sintered at 900 °C yielding a two phase structure Fe3BO6 and Fe2O3. The sintered pellets were electro-deoxidized in CaCl2 by applying 3.1 Volts at 850°C for 12 hours. This yielded Fe and Fe2B in proportions slightly deviating from the target composition. The chemical pathway of redu...
