On the Performance of Acoustic Intensity based Source Localization with an Open Spherical Microphone Array

Sound source localization is important in a variety of contexts. A notable example is acoustic scene analysis for parametric spatial audio where not only recording the sound source but also deducing its direction is necessary. Sound source localization methods based on acoustic intensity provide a viable alternative to more traditional, delay-based techniques. However, special sound intensity probes or microphone arrays need to be used. This paper presents the evaluation of the sound source localization performance of an icosahedral open spherical microphone array using a method based on intensity vector distributions in time-frequency domain.

ON THE ACCURACY OF OPEN SPHERICAL MICROPHONE ARRAYS FOR MEASURING ACOUSTIC INTENSITY
Hacıhabiboğlu, Hüseyin (2013-10-23)
Acoustic intensity can be used for different purposes such as sound source localisation, source separation and spatial audio object coding. Three-dimensional measurement of the acoustic intensity requires the design of special microphone arrays. A theoretical analysis and numerical simulations of intensity measurements using open spherical microphone arrays are presented in this paper. The calculation of the acoustic intensity using signals from an open spherical microphone array is presented first. Error m...
Modelling sound source localization under precedence effect using multivariate Gaussian mixtures
Hacıhabiboğlu, Hüseyin (2002-10-10)
The precedence effect refers to the property of the human auditory system that enables accurate localization of sound sources where many interfering echoes of the original signal are also present. Perception of the elevation, azimuth, and distance of sound sources are affected in the presence of an echo. The multivariate Gaussian mixture model proposed in this paper combines azimuth, elevation and distance perception, and provides a general framework for mode...
The Role Of Morphology in The Processing Of English-Turkish False Cognates: Evidence From A Backward Lexical Translation Task
Kırkıcı, Bilal; Ataman, Esra (2017-06-24)
False cognates are lexical items that display overlapping orthographic and/or phonological properties in two languages but little or no semantic similarity. Studies investigating the processing of false cognates have predominantly disregarded the effect of morphology (cf. Janke & Kolokonte, 2015). Additionally, studies on the processing of (false) cognates have almost exclusively dwelt on typologically-related language pairs like English-Italian and English-German, disregarding the processing of (false) cog...
Investigating the performance of segmentation methods with deep learning models for sentiment analysis on turkish informal texts
Kurt, Fatih; Karagöz, Pınar; Department of Information Systems (2018)
This work investigates segmentation approaches for informal short texts in morphologically rich languages in order to e ectively classify the sentiment. The two building blocks of the proposed work in this thesis are segmentation and deep neural network model building. Segmentation focuses on preprocessing of text with di erent methodologies. These methodologies are grouped under four distinct approaches; namely, morphological, sub-word, tokenization, and hybrid approaches. There is mostly multiple numbers ...
A comparative analysis of matched field processors for underwater acoustic source localization
Sarıkaya, Tevfik Bahadır; Çiloğlu, Tolga; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
In this thesis, localization of the underwater sound sources using matched field processing technique is considered. Localization of the underwater sound sources is one of the most important problems encountered in underwater acoustics and signal processing. Many techniques were developed to localize sources in range, depth and bearing angle. However, most of these techniques do not consider or only slightly takes into account the environmental factors that dramatically effect the propagation of underwater ...
