There is a consensus that climate change, which is about to become a major disaster for humankind, is largely due to anthropogenic activities. Greenhouse gases (dominated by CO2) emissions play a dominant role there. Majority of the emissions results from energy consumption. Today, mitigating CO2 emissions consists one of the fundamental missions of the humankind. One such task is to reduce the global energy demand. Enhancing efficiency, recycling, promoting behavioral changes to reduce energy demanding activities are among such measures. In this work, the effectiveness of another set of approaches involving the alteration of energy sources and carriers, while meeting the specified energy demand forecasts has been investigated. Predictions for the energy demand and resulting CO2 emissions are calculated on economic sectors basis. Materials demand forecasts for the industry sector, passenger and freight activity forecasts for the transport sector, and energy demand forecasts directly for the buildings sector have been collected from the literature. These sources are selected specifically so that no mitigation intended reductions to future demands have been applied. Electricity generated from renewables and nuclear, electrolytic hydrogen, and solar thermal are designated as the new energy carriers and sources. By recommending their penetration rates in all three economic sectors, electricity demand until 2100 has been determined. Data for today’s operating power plants are analyzed and the need for the additional generation capacity is determined. A generation mix, consisting of renewable and nuclear, is proposed and the resulting generation capacity requirement and CO2 emissions until 2100, are assessed.

Greenhouse effect reduction by recovering energy from waste landfills in Pakistan
Zuberi, M. Jibran S.; Ali, Shazia F. (2015-04-01)
Landfills all around the world are one of the major sources that contribute towards global warming and climate change. Although landfilling should be prioritized last in the waste management hierarchy due to highest greenhouse gas emissions as compared to other waste management systems it is still very common around the world. In this study, methane emissions are estimated by applying First Order Decay model to landfills in Pakistan over the latest data available by Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency....
Architectural design for climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in existing buildings
Akköse, Gizem; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2019)
Climate change has been proven largely to be a consequence of human activities and has a destructive impact on ecosystems. Societies and economies have become a growing global concern for the last few years and the building industry has a key role in this change due to its huge amount of environmental footprint. The energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions of the built environment influence the climate in a negative way while the changing climate also influences the energy and thermal performance o...
Emission reductions and future of energy policies in Turkey. are renewables an alternative?
Önenli, Özge; Ercan, Hakan; Kat, Bora; Department of Earth System Science (2019)
Climate change is considered one of the greatest threats that the world has ever faced. Human activities are the main cause of the excessive greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. GHGs created by the anthropogenic effects are far greater than the naturally present portions in the atmosphere and in charge of the alteration in the composition of the atmosphere. Which human activity is responsible for global warming? The main contributor of the GHGs is the energy sector on which human activities are deeply...
