An increase in demand to land results in building structures and infrastructures on problematic soils. Most encountered problems are low bearing capacity, excessive settlement and liquefaction. There are wide ranges of ground improvement methods to treat problematic soils. In this study, available site investigation data in Northern Cyprus was used to determine the liquefaction-prone locations of the country. Additionally, geophysical site investigation techniques were utilized to collect data to fulfil missing data to cover problematic sites. Furthermore, available ground improvement techniques were evaluated to come up with a newly developed, most sustainable ground improvement solution for North Cyprus to treat those determined liquefaction-prone sites. In this manner, the naturally available gypsum was sintered and mixed with available clay on site to form earthen piles. Additionally, that newly developed composite was evaluated through laboratory tests to determine the strength, stiffness and durability performance of the newly developed blend. Finally, field conditions were mimicked by utilizing a purpose-built laboratory scale shake table to study the performance of the newly developed ground improvement method under static and dynamic conditions.
