Late Ordovician (Hirnantian) glacio-marine deposits in the Central and Eastern Taurides and Southeast Anatolian Autochthon Belt (SAAB) in Turkey are mainly composed of diamictites, subrounded granitic pebbles, and rounded/subrounded lonestone pebbles. The granitic pebbles are dated as 576.5 +/- 3.3, 576.7 +/- 5.7, 598.4 +/- 7.5, 717.5 +/- 8.0, 789.5 +/- 3.7, and 964.6 +/- 4.6 Ma. The geochemical signatures and dated granitic pebbles in the Central and Eastern Taurides are interpreted to have been derived from the Late Neoproterozoic granitoids/metagranitic rocks of the Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS; the Sinai Peninsula and the Eastern Desert of Egypt). The youngest Pb-206/U-238 ages in the diamictites (499.1 +/- 4.2 Ma in the SAAB, 530.5 +/- 5.3 Ma in the Eastern Taurides, and 562.5 +/- 5.4 Ma in the Central Taurides) and in the lonestones (528.2 +/- 4.5 Ma in the Central Taurides, 530.8 +/- 5.2 Ma in the Eastern Taurides) indicate that detrital zircons were directly transported mainly from the northern margin of Gondwana and/or Arabia during the Late Ordovician, not from peri-Gondwanan parts of the European margin. Kernel/probability density diagrams of zircon ages from the lonestone pebbles in the Eastern and Central Taurides are interpreted as evidence for their derivation from Late/Middle Cambrian siliciclastic rocks in the Israeli part of the Sinai Peninsula. The provenance of detrital zircon populations in the diamictites in the Central and Eastern Taurides is directly correlated with magmatic activity of the Elat (Taba)-Feiran island arc, the Sa'al island arc, and the postcollisional magmatic suites in the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt). However, the corresponding successions in the SAAB have more abundant Late Cryogenian age components, suggesting the Ha'il/Afif/Ad Dawadimi/Ar-Rayn terranes of the eastern Arabian Shield as their provenance. These distinctive age patterns indicate that glacio-marine successions in the SAAB had different paleogeographic positions than their equivalent units in the Central and Eastern Taurides during deposition of the Late Ordovician glacio-marine units.

Sedimentological and Geochemical Records of Lower Cretaceous Carbonate Successions Around Trabzon (NE Turkey): Implications for Paleoenvironmental Evolution and Paleoclimatological Conditions of Tethys
Upper Jurassic–lower Cretaceous carbonates (Berdiga Fm.) are widely exposed in the NE Turkey. An integrated study of sedimentological and geochemical analysis was carried out on the lower Cretaceous carbonates of Berdiga Fm. in Trabzon area in order to reveal the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatological conditions of northern Tethyan Ocean. Three microfacies types were identified corresponding to inner to slope environments. Inner platform environment developed during the Hauterivian–Aptian interval. End ...
Use of sedimentary structures in the recognition of sequence boundaries in Upper Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous peritidal carbonates of the Western Taurides, Turkey
Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Altıner, Demir (Informa UK Limited, 2001-08-01)
Subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal carbonate facies are recognized in the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian)-Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) peritidal carbonates of the Fele area (Western Taurides, Turkey). Vertical stacking patterns of these facies are of a cyclical character, shallowing upward is the trend of the cyclicity in these carbonate facies. In-situ karstic breccias, collapse breccias, caliche (laminar calcrete), "Microcodium" accretion, and root casts are structures commonly indicative of third-order ...
Erosional truncation of uppermost Permian shallow-marine carbonates and implications for Permian-Triassic boundary events

On shallow-marine carbonate buildups in south China, Turkey, and Japan, uppermost Permian skeletal limestones are truncated by an erosional surface that exhibits as much as 10 cm of topography, including overhanging relief. Sedimentary facies, microfabrics, carbon isotopes, and cements together suggest that erosion occurred in a submarine setting. Moreover, biostratigraphic data from south China demonstrate that the surface postdates the uppermost Permian sequence boundary at the global stratotype section a...
Vermiculitization of phlogopite in Metagabbro, central Turkey
Toksoy Köksal, Fatma; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2001-02-01)
Dioctahedral vermiculite occurs in an isolated metagabbro klippe (Kurancali Metagabbro) that belongs to the Central Anatolian Ophiolites from central Turkey. Both the metagabbro and the structurally underlying high-grade metamorphic rocks are intruded by granitic rocks. The Kurancali Metagabbro is characterized by its well-developed compositional layering, and the presence of vermiculitized phlogopite rich layers. Petrographic and mineralogic studies show that the primary mineral phases in the host rock are...
Rapid cooling history of a Neotethyan ophiolite: Evidence for contemporaneous subduction initiation and metamorphic sole formation

The Beywhir-Hoyran Nappes, including Mesozoic carbonate platform rocks, deepsea sediments, and ophiolite-related units, crop out extensively on the western limb of the Isparta Angle in the Central Taurides, Turkey. The ophiolite-related rocks are represented by variably serpentinized harzburgitic mantle tectonites, tectonically underlain by a subophiolitic metamorphic sole and melange. The harzburgitic mantle tectonites and metamorphic sole are intruded by undeformed isolated dikes. Protoliths of the metamo...
