The effect of managing nutrients in the performance of anaerobic digesters of municipal wastewater treatment plants
Demirer, Sibel Uludag; TAŞKIN, BİLGİN; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Duran, Metin (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-09-01)
Is it possible to create conditions in the anaerobic digesters to control nutrients without changing the performance of a reactor? This study investigates an answer for this question. To this purpose, anaerobic reactors are operated at high concentrations of Mg2+ ion to harvest the nutrient ions (NH4 (+) and PO4 (3-)) in the form of struvite, that is, magnesium ammonium phosphate. The effects of this modification on the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge were investigated in terms of chemical oxygen deman...

The effects of twelve quorum-sensing gene products on the expression of bacabcde operon in bacillus subtilis
Öğülür, İsmail; Özcengiz, Gülay; Department of Biotechnology (2008)
In Bacillus subtilis, genetic competence, sporulation and antibiotic production are controlled by quorum-sensing global regulatory mechanism. Bacilysin, being produced and excreted by certain strains of Bacillus subtilis, is a dipeptide antibiotic composed of L-alanine and L-anticapsin. We showed that the biosynthesis of bacilysin is under the control of quorum sensing global regulatory pathway through the action of ComQ/ComX, PhrC (CSF), ComP/ComA in a Spo0K (Opp)-dependent manner. Recently, the ywfBCDEF g...
The Optimization of Dilute Acid Hydrolysis of Cotton Stalk in Xylose Production
AKPINAR, ÖZLEM; Levent, Okan; Bostanci, Seyda; Bakir, Ufuk; Yılmaz, Levent (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-01-01)
Cotton stalk, a lignocellulosic waste material, is composed of xylose that can be used as a raw material for production of xylitol, a high-value product. There is a growing interest in the use of lignocellulosic wastes for conversion into various chemicals because of their low cost and the fact that they are renewable and abundant. The objective of the study was to determine the effects of H(2)SO(4) concentration, temperature, and reaction time on the production of sugars (xylose, glucose, and arabinose) an...
A kinetic study on the plasmid stability of three Lactococcus lactis strains
Avsaroglu, M. Dilek; Buzrul, Sencer; Sanlibaba, Pinar; Alpas, Hami; Akcelik, Mustafa (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-11-01)
The plasmid stability of three wild type Lactococcus lactis strains and their mutants was investigated at different incubation time and temperatures in two different media [M17 broth and reconstituted skim milk (RSM)]. The results showed that both incubation times and temperature are effective on plasmid loss. The plasmid profiles of wild type strains exhibited 8 to 9 distinct plasmid species with molecular weights from 2.1 to 24.0 kb. Lactose fermentation ability was found to be encoded by 22.2 (strain U70...
