From supramolecular chemistry to fundamental organic chemistry: bis-rosette nanotubes and novel molecular frameworks
İğci, Cansu; Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem; Department of Chemistry (2017)
Novel supramolecular structures are inspired by many functional biological systems present in nature. The design of supramolecular components is concerned with the conceptualization of an organized state of matter that possess the steric and functional information necessary to translate complex mixture into ordered structures. The organization of matter brought about through non-covalent forces, and the structures generated are almost impossible to put together from a covalent perspective. Hydrogen bonding ...
From primitive behaviors to goal-directed behavior using affordances
Doǧar, Mehmet R.; Çakmak, Maya; Uǧur, Emre; Şahin, Erol (2007-12-01)
In this paper, we studied how a mobile robot equipped with a 3D laser scanner can start from primitive behaviors and learn to use them to achieve goal-directed behaviors. For this purpose, we propose a learning scheme that is based on the concept of "affordances", where the robot first learns about the different kind of effects it can create in the environment and then links these effects with the perception of the initial environment and the executed primitive behavior. It uses these learned relations to c...
FROM ACOUSTICS TO VOCAL TRACT TIME FUNCTIONS
Mitra, Vikramjit; Oezbek, I. Yuecel; Nam, Hosung; Zhou, Xinhui; Espy-Wilson, Carol Y. (2009-04-24)
In this paper we present a technique for obtaining Vocal Tract (VT) time functions from the acoustic speech signal. Knowledge-based Acoustic Parameters (APs) are extracted from the speech signal and a pertinent subset is used to obtain the mapping between them and the VT time functions. Eight different vocal tract constriction variables consisting of live constriction degree variables,. lip aperture (LA), tongue body (TBCD), tongue tip (TTCD), velum (VEL), and glottis (GLO); and three constriction location ...
From human grasping to robot grasping
Oztop, Erhan; Ozyer, Baris; Ugur, Emre; Kawato, Mitsuo (Elsevier BV; 2009-01-01)
We will report our ongoing work on task dependent grasping in humans and realization of this skill on a robotic platform. The human movements are recorded using a motion capture system and analyzed off-line or used online to control a robotic system. The off-line results showed that humans deploy different grasps for objects depending on the task specification (e.g. grasping a hammer for prying or driving a nail), even though the orientation and location of the objects were kept the same. The off-line data ...
From Washington consensus to global crises
İnan, Mutlu; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2010)
This thesis focuses on the changing modes of state intervention into the economy in neoliberalism. It contends that the so called free market is neither a natural process nor an inevitable result of the harmony of interest, but the result of a deliberate political making process. The global economic crisis provided ample evidence to refute the claim that state and market are separately existing and antagonistic entities and indicates that the issue is not the market or the state, since the state in a capita...
