Coal pyrolysis: Thermogravimetric study and kinetic analysis
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2003-10-01)
This research comprises the coal pyrolysis by thermogravimetry (TG/DTG). During the pyrolysis of the coal samples studied, gradual and continuous weight loss over the entire temperature range was observed. The weight loss below 210degreesC is related to the removal of moisture. The subsequent pyrolysis process as revealed by the corresponding DTG peak that is related to primary devolatilization, during which carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen compounds are released. Arrhenius-type kinetic model was used to determ...
Mine detection using time domain THz spectroscopy
Altan, Hakan (2009-04-13)
The use of broadband techniques in the Terahertz (THz) region, has allowed us to probe the effectiveness of far-infrared waves to assess the penetration depths required for anti-personnel mine detection. Using THz-Time Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) based methods we have probed the effective penetration depth of broadband THz pulses through soil samples collected locally in Ankara, Turkey. It was found that certain frequencies within the spectral range from 0.01 to 1THz were severely attenuated by both absor...

Landfill settlement with decomposition and gas generation
Durmusoglu, E; Corapcioglu, MY; Tuncay, Kağan (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2005-09-01)
A one-dimensional multiphase numerical model is developed to simulate the vertical settlement involving liquid and gas flows in a deformable.(settling) municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. MSW is represented by a chemical composition, and a global stoichiometric reaction is used to estimate the maximum yield of gas generation. Following the general assumption accepted in the literature, the gas generated by waste decomposition is assumed to comprise of in I ethane (CH4)and carbon dioxide (CO2). The gas gen...
