DISTRIBUTION OF CETACEAN AND THEIR FORAGING HABITATS IN THE BLACK SEA
Başkır, Saba; Gücü , Ali Cemal; Department of Chemical Oceanography (2019-10-04)
Cetacean hunting was banned in Turkey in 1983. In the following decades, as the ecological shifts in the Black Sea occur, over-increase in the cetacean populations were hypothesized as the cause of the decline in economically valuable pelagic fish species like Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and Sprat (Sprattus sprattus). These arguments create the pressure of re-legalization of direct killing of cetaceans, whom are assumed to be foraging mainly on Anchovy. These arguments, although raise concerns from the...
DISTRIBUTION OF SURFICIAL SHELF SEDIMENTS IN THE NORTHEASTERN AND SOUTHWESTERN PARTS OF THE SEA OF MARMARA - STRAIT AND CANYON REGIMES OF THE DARDANELLES AND BOSPORUS
ERGIN, M; BODUR, MN; EDIGER, V (Elsevier BV, 1991-02-01)
Surficial sediment samples collected from the northeastern and southwestern shelf regions of the Sea of Marmara, together with data available from other sources, indicate marked variations in sediment compositions resulting from differences in topographical, hydrological and biological conditions. In the strait channels of the Dardanelles and Bosporus, where strong undercurrents prevail, the floor was covered mostly by coarse-grained sediments (rich in sand and gravel). However, in areas of relatively low e...
Distribution of dissolved and particulate forms of iron and manganese in the Black Sea
Erdoğan, Selahattin; Yemenicioğlu, Semal; Department of Marine Sciences (2002)
The principal aim of this study is to examine the behavior of dissolved inorganic and particulate forms of manganese and iron compounds in the oxic/anoxic transition (suboxic) zone of the western cyclone and coastal margin of the Black Sea. The samples were collected from the stations visited during three cruises of RV/Bilim at July 2000, September 2000, July 2001 and RV/Knorr at July 2001 in the Black Sea. In addition, real time profiles of dissolved Mn and Fe(ll) were obtained using a continuous profiling...
Distribution of phytoplankton in the southern Black Sea in summer 1996, spring and autumn 1998
Eker-Develi, E; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2003-03-01)
The species composition, abundance, and biomass of micro- (>15 mum) and nano- (<15 mu m) phytoplankton were studied along the southern Black Sea during June-July 1996 and March-April and September 1998. A total of 150 species were identified, similar to 50% of them being dinoflagellates. The average total phytoplankton abundance changed from 77 x 10(3) Cells l(-1) in spring to 110 x 10(3) cells l(-1) in autumn and biomass from 250 mu g l(-1) in summer to 1370 mu g l(-1) in spring. Based on the extensive sam...
Distribution of dissolved forms of iron and manganese in the Black Sea
YEMENİCİOĞLU, SEMAL; Erdogan, Selahattin; Tuğrul, Süleyman (Elsevier BV, 2006-01-01)
Dissolved forms of the redox-sensitive elements manganese (Mn-DISS) and iron (Fe(II) and Fe(III)) were measured in the oxic/anoxic transition zone, or suboxic zone, of the Black Sea. An offset was found between dissolved manganese and iron gradients at all stations. In the western cyclonic gyre of the Black Sea, the onset of dissolved Mn (> 0.1 mu M) was located at a density of about sigma(t) = 15.85, where the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) was less than 5 mu M. The onset of dissolved Fe(II) (> 0.0...
