Preliminary assessment of seismic vulnerability of lifelines with a focus on bridges
Topkara, Naz; Sarıca, Gizem Mestav; Caner, Alp; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül (null; 2015-08-24)
The seismic performance of individual bridges have always been studied in detail but not usually considered as a group of bridges that can form the weakest link in a lifeline. The analytical methods used in bridge seismic design have been well established in the specifications developed over the last twenty years. Seismic performance of bridges is typically assessed for a certain design return period of an earthquake with certain peak ground acceleration. In some cases, bridge seismic fragility curves are u...
Preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey - Part I: Statistical model based on structural characteristics
Ozcebe, G; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih; Aydogan, V; Yakut, Ahmet (2003-05-13)
The 1999 earthquakes caused huge damage and economic losses in Turkey. The city of Duzce, hit by the second earthquake of Mw=7.2, suffered widespread damage to many RC buildings. Survey teams conducted post-earthquake evaluations on selected buildings that suffered various degrees of damage. The information collected was analyzed to set up a correlation between the attributes affecting seismic performance and the observed damage. A procedure, developed using a statistical method called discriminant analysis...
Preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey Part II: Inclusion of site characteristics
Yakut, Ahmet; Ozcebe, G; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih (2003-05-13)
The vulnerability assessment method, described in the companion paper [1], relies on a damage score, which is compared with an appropriate cutoff value to identify the buildings as "safe", "unsafe" or "intermediate". The cutoff values are considered to be valid for damaging earthquakes and regions similar to Duzce, where the data was gathered. To generalize the procedure, the variability of ground motion with respect to soil properties and the distance to source needs to be incorporated. This was done by mo...
Preliminary study on the effects of photo traps used to monitor Mediterranean monk seals Monachus monachus
Gücü, Ali Cemal (2010-05-20)
I evaluate the possible deterrent effect of visual-flash photo traps used to monitor Mediterranean monk seals Monachus monachus in their caves. Two systems of photo trapping were deployed in a cave, one using a flashing visible light and the other using an infrared light source. These systems were used alternately, each for an average duration of 1 wk at a time. A total of 453 digital photographs were taken by the photo traps throughout the experiment, which was conducted from July 2007 to February 2008. Ba...
