The 1999 earthquakes caused huge damage and economic losses in Turkey. The city of Duzce, hit by the second earthquake of Mw=7.2, suffered widespread damage to many RC buildings. Survey teams conducted post-earthquake evaluations on selected buildings that suffered various degrees of damage. The information collected was analyzed to set up a correlation between the attributes affecting seismic performance and the observed damage. A procedure, developed using a statistical method called discriminant analysis, is presented. The details of the procedure and the content of the database are summarized. The variability of ground motion with respect to the soil properties and the distance to source was incorporated in the improved procedure presented in the companion paper [1].

Seismic performance of mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings in Izmir Bayrakli after the 2020 Samos earthquake
Demirel, Ismail Ozan; Yakut, Ahmet; Binici, Barış (2022-07-01)
© 2022 Elsevier LtdOn October 30th 2020, offshores of Samos Island, Greece was hit by a shallow earthquake of Mw = 6.9 moment magnitude. Located 76 km away from the earthquake's epicenter, the mid-rise reinforced concrete (RC) building stock of the densely populated Izmir Bayrakli district experienced the most severe structural damage. Although the horizontal peak ground acceleration recorded at the site (PGA = 0.11 g) was well below design values recommended by the past and the present Turkish seismic code...
Identifying buildings with high collapse risk based on samos earthquake damage inventory in Izmir
Binici, Barış; Yakut, Ahmet; Canbay, Erdem; Tuncay, Kağan (2022-01-01)
Samos Earthquake caused the collapse of about fifty buildings in Izmir city center, resulting in over 120 fatalities. The response spectra of the ground motions at the soft soil sites in Izmir revealed that the spectral accelerations in the period range of 0.5-1.5 s are similar to the spectral accelerations defined by the response spectrum corresponding to the 72-year return period. Despite experiencing accelerations lower than those defined by the Turkish Code design spectrum (475-year return period), sign...
Evaluation of alluvial deposits in Gemlik basin in terms of earthquake codes.
Avşar, Ulaş; Doyuran, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2006)
Gemlik County is located in the Marmara Region (NW Turkey), which has been affected by destructive earthquakes sourced from North Anatolian Fault System throughout its history. The bulk of the settlement rests on alluvial deposits of the Gemlik pull-apart basin. So, it is vital to investigate the foundation soils in this basin and the response of them to earthquakes. Many earthquake codes were established by the authorities in different countries of the world to estimate the possible ground shaking and seis...
Analysis of Accelerations from the 1 October 1995 Dinar, Turkey, earthquake
Anderson, JG; Zeng, YH; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (2001-12-01)
The Dinar earthquake, 1 October 1995, occurred in southwestern Turkey and had a moment magnitude of 6.4 and a normal faulting mechanism. The earthquake caused 90 deaths, over 200 injuries, and a large amount of damage. It was recorded by seven strong-motion accelerographs. The strong-motion accelerograph at Dinar is on the edge of the surface projection of the fault. The record from Dinar is possibly unique in its proximity to the causative fault for this type of mechanism. The Dinar strong-motion station i...
The Assessment of seismic performance of multi-span highway bridges in Turkey including column deterioration
Ocak, Canan Elif; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Considering the latest three major earthquakes occurred in Turkey, the performance of the bridges could be evaluated as successful. Bridges are one of the most important members of transportation network and it is important for them to survive during earthquakes. Contrary to the general belief, minimum damage during earthquakes mean very high safety factors included to the design rather than a success. Up to now, the bridges designed in Turkey are based on AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and T...
