Seismic stratigraphy of Late Quaternary sediments of western Mersin Bay shelf, (NE Mediterranean Sea)
Okyar, M; Ergin, M; Evans, G (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-15)
High-resolution shallow seismic-reflection profiles obtained from the western Mersin Bay have revealed the existence of the two distinct depositional sequences (C and B) lying on a narrow and relatively steeply-sloping continental shelf which mainly receives its sediments from the ephemeral rivers. The upper Holocene sedimentary sequence (C) is characterized by stratified (simple to complex) to chaotic reflection configurations produced by the development of a prograding wedge of terrigenous sediment. Parti...
Seismic stratigraphy of Late Quaternary deposits on the continental shelf of Antalya Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean
Tezcan, Devrim (2006-09-01)
The Late Quaternary sedimentation and structural features of the continental shelf of Antalya Bay (SW Turkey) have been investigated using a single channel high-resolution shallow profiling system. Two seismic units denoted as unit 1 and unit 2 bounded by two major unconformities (R-1 and R-2) have been identified. R-1 and R-2 are type-1 sequence boundaries that formed under sub-aerial conditions during the Late Quaternary sea level lowstands. An acoustic basement (AB) is recognized in the study region; it ...
SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHY AND LATE QUATERNARY SEDIMENTS IN INNER AND MID-SHELF AREAS OF EASTERN MERSIN BAY, NORTHEASTERN MEDITERRANEAN-SEA
ERGIN, M; OKYAR, M; TIMUR, K (Elsevier BV, 1992-02-29)
High-resolution shallow-seismic reflection (Uniboom) profiles obtained in inner and mid-shelf areas of eastern Mersin Bay (Turkey, northeastern Mediterranean) show that the sedimentary column comprises two major and distinct lithological sequences (C and B) separated by a reflector (R) which is interpreted as the pre-Holocene surface. The upper sedimentary sequence (C) is thought to represent roughly the Holocene and is characterized by parallel/divergent to sigmoidal reflection patterns above (Unit 1) and ...
SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHY OF THE FAULT-CONTROLLED SUBMARINE-CANYON VALLEY SYSTEM ON THE SHELF AND UPPER SLOPE OF ANAMUR BAY, NORTHEASTERN MEDITERRANEAN-SEA
EDIGER, V; OKYAR, M; ERGIN, M (Elsevier BV, 1993-11-01)
High-resolution shallow seismic reflection (Uniboom) and echosounding profiles obtained on the shelf and upper slope areas of Anamur Bay (Turkey, northeastern Mediterranean) were studied together with previous data on the onshore geology of the area to investigate the origin and related seismic stratigraphy of the submarine Anamur Canyon. It was found that the main axial trend of the submarine Anamur Canyon is aligned with the offshore projection of the N-S orientated, onshore Anamur thrust fault of Late Cr...
Seismic attenuation tomography of the Sn phase beneath the Turkish-Iranian Plateau and the Zagros mountain belt
Kaviani, Ayoub; Sandvol, Eric; Ku, Wenfei; Beck, Susan L.; Türkelli, Niyazi; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Delph, Jonathan R. (2022-08-01)
The Turkish-Iranian Plateau and the Zagros highlands are among the most prominent physiographic features in the Middle East and were formed as a result of continental collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. To better understand the nature of the lithospheric mantle and the origin of the observed seismic anomalies in this region, we investigated seismic attenuation of the uppermost mantle by detailed measurements of the quality factor of the Sn seismic phase (Sn Q). To that end, we collected a lar...
