Seismic stratigraphy of Late Quaternary deposits on the continental shelf of Antalya Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean

2006-09-01
The Late Quaternary sedimentation and structural features of the continental shelf of Antalya Bay (SW Turkey) have been investigated using a single channel high-resolution shallow profiling system. Two seismic units denoted as unit 1 and unit 2 bounded by two major unconformities (R-1 and R-2) have been identified. R-1 and R-2 are type-1 sequence boundaries that formed under sub-aerial conditions during the Late Quaternary sea level lowstands. An acoustic basement (AB) is recognized in the study region; it is the oldest unit in the area and is overlain by seismic units 1 and 2. The seismic unit 2 deposited on R-2 prior to the Last Glacial Maximum lowstand of the sea level and consists of two subunits (2A and 2B). Subunit 2A is interpreted as a lowstand systems tract. The upper sediments of subunit 2B appear to have been truncated by erosion. Seismic unit 1, the uppermost unit formed on R, during the Last Glacial Maximum lowstand of the sea level and the following post glacial transgression, is comprised of three subunits 1A, 1B, and 1C. These subunits form the lowstand, transgressive and highstand systems tracts of unit 1, respectively. Off the Aksu River mouth, where the maximum sedimentation occurs, lowstand delta facies (Delta(1) and Delta(2)) formed in both unit 1 and unit 2. Sediment supply and tectonic uplift that interact with glacio-eustatism have also controlled temporal and spatial distributions of Late Quaternary deposits in the shelf of Antalya Bay.

Seismic evidence of shallow gas in the sediment on the shelf off Trabzon, southeastern Black Sea
Okyar, M; Ediger, V (1999-04-01)
High-resolution seismic surveys carried out on the shelf off Trabzon (southeastern Black Sea) show that the sub-bottom stratigraphy consists of two main depositional sequences (A and B) one of which contains zones of acoustic turbidity. Of these, the upper depositional sequence (A) is thought to comprise Holocene sediments, while the lower depositional sequence (B) is interpreted as approximating to the Pleistocene. The boundary between these sequences is defined by a reflector (R), which is interpreted as ...
SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHY OF THE FAULT-CONTROLLED SUBMARINE-CANYON VALLEY SYSTEM ON THE SHELF AND UPPER SLOPE OF ANAMUR BAY, NORTHEASTERN MEDITERRANEAN-SEA
EDIGER, V; OKYAR, M; ERGIN, M (Elsevier BV, 1993-11-01)
High-resolution shallow seismic reflection (Uniboom) and echosounding profiles obtained on the shelf and upper slope areas of Anamur Bay (Turkey, northeastern Mediterranean) were studied together with previous data on the onshore geology of the area to investigate the origin and related seismic stratigraphy of the submarine Anamur Canyon. It was found that the main axial trend of the submarine Anamur Canyon is aligned with the offshore projection of the N-S orientated, onshore Anamur thrust fault of Late Cr...
Tectonic geomorphology and Plio-Quaternary structural evolution of the Tuzgolu fault zone, Turkey: Implications for deformation in the interior of the Central Anatolian Plateau
Krystopowicz, Neil J.; Schoenbohm, Lindsay M.; Rimando, Jeremy; Brocard, Gilles; Rojay, Fuat Bora (Geological Society of America, 2020-10-01)
Situated within the interior of the Central Anatolian Plateau (Turkey), the 200-km-long Tuzgolu extensional fault zone offers first-order constraints on the timing and pattern of regional deformation and uplift. In this study, we analyze the morphometrics of catchments along the Tuzgolti range-front fault and the parallel, basinward Hamzali fault using a variety of measured morphometric indicators coupled with regional geomorphic observations and longitudinal profile analysis. In addition, we use field and ...
Sea-floor sediments and bedforms around Turkey, revealed by side-scan sonar imagery
Okyar, M; Ediger, V (1997-01-01)
The use of side-scan sonar imagery to construct facies and bedform maps of an area of sea floor has been known for some considerable time. Such maps reveal the type of sediments and bottom morphology, allowing sedimentologists to infer the sedimentation processes.
