Cross-linguistic perspective on coordinated multiple sluicing
Gracanın Yüksek, Martına(2018-12-31)
Coordinated multiple sluicing ("John said something about someone, but I don't remember what and about whom.") has been understudied in general, and in languages other than English (e.g., Croatian and Turkish) in particular. The project aims at filling this gap by investigating coordinated sluicing construction across three typologically different languages: English, Turkish and Croatian. The findings will shed light on the properties of coordination in natural language as well as on the typology of wh-move...
Politics, law and morality: David Hume on justice
Eryılmaz, Enes; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2011)
This thesis evaluates David Hume’s notion of justice by examining the coherence in his legal, moral, and political philosophy. It is argued that on the whole, Hume’s use of the concept justice is coherent in his theories of law, ethics, and politics. To this end, firstly, Hume’s moral thought is examined in detail. Secondly, his legal theory and his position in legal philosophy are considered with references to its moral aspects. Next, Hume’s notion of justice is examined in its relation with the state. It ...
Diametral strength testing of hydroxyapatites doped with yttrium and fluoride
Evis, Zafer; Sun, Z. P. (2010-10-01)
This study aimed to investigate the diametral strength testing of hydroxyapatite (HA) doped with Y and fluoride with different compositions. Hydroxyapatites were synthesised by precipitation method and sintered at 900, 1100 and 1300 degrees C for 1 h. High amounts of doping caused a decrease in relative densities of HAs. Higher sintering temperatures helped in increasing the relative densities. No second phases were observed by X-ray diffraction spectra of 2.5 mol.-%Y and 2.5 mol.-%F doped HA after the sint...
PHENOMENOLOGICAL GINZBURG-LANDAU THEORY OF CHARGE-DENSITY-WAVE SPECTRA
Turgut, Sadi (1994-09-15)
A phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory of charge-density waves is presented. It yields, in the absence of pinning impurities, a manifold of stable (equal-energy) states that are independent of the phase of the wave. The pinning of these waves by impurities (both weak and strong pinning) is examined in detail and spectra for various impurity distributions are analyzed in detail. Strong dependence on the wave phase, change in harmonic content, and phase shifts are common features, in addition to the appear...
Optimal Policy Synthesis from A Sequence of Goal Sets with An Application to Electric Distribution System Restoration
Isik, Ilker; Arpalı, Onur Yigit; Aydın Göl, Ebru (2021-01-01)
Motivated by the post-disaster distribution system restoration problem, in this paper, we study the problem of synthesizing the optimal policy for a Markov Decision Process (MDP) from a sequence of goal sets. For each goal set, our aim is to both maximize the probability to reach and minimize the expected time to reach the goal set. The order of the goal sets represents their priority. In particular, our aim is to generate a policy that is optimal with respect to the first goal set, and it is optimal with r...
