An extensive evaluation of nine global-scale high-resolution satellite-based rainfall (SBR) products is performed using aminimumof 6 years (within the period of 2000-13) of reference rainfall data derived from rain gauge networks in nine mountainous regions across the globe. The SBR products are compared to a recently released global reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The study areas include the eastern Italian Alps, the Swiss Alps, the western Black Sea ...
Optimally merging precipitation to minimize land surface modeling errors
Yılmaz, Mustafa Tuğrul; Shrestha, Roshan; Anantharaj, Valentine G. (American Meteorological Society, 2010-03-01)
This paper introduces a new method to improve land surface model skill by merging different available precipitation datasets, given that an accurate land surface parameter ground truth is available. Precipitation datasets are merged with the objective of improving terrestrial water and energy cycle simulation skill, unlike most common methods in which the merging skills are evaluated by comparing the results with gauge data or selected reference data. The optimal merging method developed in this study minim...
Evaluation of Multiple Satellite-Based Precipitation Products over Complex Topography
DERIN, Yagmur; Yılmaz, Koray Kamil (American Meteorological Society, 2014-08-01)
This study evaluates the performance of four satellite-based precipitation (SBP) products over the western Black Sea region of Turkey, a region characterized by complex topography that exerts strong controls on the precipitation regime. The four SBP products include the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis version 7 experimental near-real-time product (TMPA-7RT) and post-real-time research-quality product (TMPA-7A), the Climate Prediction Center morphing technique...
Statistical downscaling of monthly reservoir inflows for Kemer watershed in Turkey: use of machine learning methods, multiple GCMs and emission scenarios
OKKAN, UMUT; İnan, Gül (Wiley, 2015-09-01)
In this study, statistical downscaling of general circulation model (GCM) simulations to monthly inflows of Kemer Dam in Turkey under A1B, A2, and B1 emission scenarios has been performed using machine learning methods, multi-model ensemble and bias correction approaches. Principal component analysis (PCA) has been used to reduce the dimension of potential predictors of National Centers for Environmental Prediction and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data. Then, the reasonabl...
3D cognitive map construction by active stereo vision in a virtual world
ULUSOY PARNAS, İLKAY; Halıcı, Uğur; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (2004-10-29)
In this study, a multi-scale phase based disparity algorithm is developed. This algorithm is then applied in a simulated world. In this world there is a virtual robot which has a stereo camera system simulated with the properties similar to human eyes and there are 3D virtual objects having predefined simple shapes. The virtual robot explores its environment intelligently based on some heuristics. Only stereo images rendered from the virtual world are supplied to the robot. The robot extracts depth informat...
