Ecosystem indicators-accounting for variability in species' trophic levels
Reed, Jodie; Shannon, Lynne; VELEZ, Laure; Akoğlu, Ekin; BUNDY, Alida; Coll, Marta; FU, Caihong; FULTON, Elizabeth A.; Gruss, Arnaud; HALOUANI, Ghassen; HEYMANS, Johanna J.; HOULE, Jennifer E.; John, Emma; LE LOC'H, Francois; Salihoğlu, Barış; VERLEY, Philippe; Shin, Yunne-Jai (2017-01-01)
Trophic level (TL)-based indicators are commonly used to track the ecosystem effects of fishing as the selective removal of organisms from the food web may result in changes to the trophic structure of marine ecosystems. The use of a fixed TL per species in the calculation of TL-based indicators has been questioned, given that species' TLs vary with ontogeny, as well as over time and space. We conducted a model-based assessment of the performance of fixed TL-based indicators vs. variable TL-based indicators...
A Coupled modelling attempt of hydrodynamics and ecosystem of northern levantine basin
Aydoğdu, Ali; Salihoğlu, Barış; Cannaby, Heather Anne; Department of Physical Oceanography (2012)
A three-dimensional ocean model, ROMS, has been utilized to simulate the hydrodynamics and the ecosystem dynamics of the Northern Levantine Basin circulation. The model is one-way nested inside a coarser resolution Mediterranean Sea eco-hydrodynamics model, forced with realistically updated surface and lateral fluxes of momentum, mass, heat and nutrients. Scenario runs representing present and future time-slices of 5 years each have been used to investigate sensitivity to climate in the near future. Other s...
Nonlinear dynamics of the Black Sea ecosystem and its response to anthropogenic and climate variations
Akoğlu, Ekin; Salihoğlu, Barış; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2013)
The main objective of this research is to i) provide a quantitative understanding of the changes in the Black Sea ecosystem between 1960 – 1999, ii) to identify its food web dynamics including the infamous anchovy – Mnemiopsis shift in 1989, and iii) utilizing this understanding to explore future progressions of the Black Sea ecosystem under predicted future physical and biogeochemical changes. For this purpose, three different but complementary approaches were used all of which were detailed under three di...
Public administration reform in the context of the European Union enlargement process: the Hungarian and Turkish cases
Şener, Hasan Engin; Üstüner, Mustafa Yılmaz; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2008)
In this study, administrative reform in the EU accession process was analysed with reference to the cases of Hungary and Turkey. The main goal of this study is to show that both objective (economy) and subjective (politics) factors are important and acceding countries to have room to manoeuvre in the context of the social-liberal framework of the EU. To this end, necessary causality between neoliberal administrative reform and EU accession, and determinism in the enlargement process, which leaves no room to...
Separation simulation for helicopter external stores and generation of safe separation envelopes
Kapulu, Özge; Tekinalp, Ozan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In many aerospace applications, simulations are used to predict the behavior of the flight vehicle and reduce the number of flight tests required. In this thesis modeling and development of separation simulation tool for helicopter external stores is carried out. Detailed explanations of mathematical modeling, procedure of store separation analysis and collision detection approach from flight dynamics point of view are presented. The nonlinear mathematical model of armed configuration of Black Hawk helicopt...
