In this study, the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) specifically; 17 Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) and 19 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated in the sediment samples of Balıkesir (İkizcetepeler) Dam Lake. Sixteen sampling points were chosen for determination of concentrations of OCPs and PAHs After ultrasonic bath extraction of the sediment samples GC-MS was used as analytical tool. Extraction efficiencies changes from 63.8 to 87.4% depending on the type of the POPs. Average OCP concentration was found in the range of 3.33-379 µg/kg a, average PAH concentration was found in the range of 3.28-32.9 µg/kg. Pollution maps regarding OCP and PAH distributions were drawn and the correlation between these two pollutant types was investigated. The quality control (QC) and quality assurance tests were applied by the analysis of standard reference materials (SRMs), surrogate standards and analysis replicates.

Evaluation of Turkey's status in terms of compliance with the requirements of the Stockholm convention

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are stable, toxic compounds released into the environment due to anthropogenic activities. POPs can accumulate in fatty tissues of living organisms and become concentrated up the food chain, posing a serious threat to environment and human health. Once they are released, POPs participate in long-range transport and can have a widespread effect. Stockholm Convention on POPs, which was adopted in 2001 and entered into force in 2004, is a global treaty to take measures agai...
Triclosan removal by nanofiltration from surface water
Öğütverici, Abdullah; Yetiş, Ülkü; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
Nowadays, organic pollutants occurring in surface waters have raised substantial concern in public. Triclosan (TCS) is one of the antimicrobial agents which are utilized in both domestic and industrial application. In this study nanofiltration (NF) of TCS in surface water was investigated. Laboratory scale cross-flow device is operated in total recycle mode and DK-NF and DL-NF membranes were used. Kesikköprü Reservoir (Ankara) water was used as raw water. Effect of natural organic matter (NOM) content of ra...
Development of new methods for the synthesis of pyrazoles, 4-iodopyrazoles, isoxazoles and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles
Kıvrak, Arif; Zora, Metin; Department of Chemistry (2011)
Synthesis of five-membered heteroaromatic compounds such as pyrazoles, isoxazoles and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles are important for pharmaceutical industry and material science due to their applications. Although there are many methods to prepare such compounds, new variants continue to appear since they exhibit a wide range of biological and medicinal activities. In this thesis, new methods were developed for the synthesis of 4-iodopyrazoles, pyrazoles, isoxazoles, 1,2,4-oxadiazoles and/or 1,2,4-oxadiazepines. In th...
Ambient VOC concentrations in the city of Balikesir and its environment
Yalçın, Giyasettin Efdal; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
The assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become an important field of interest in atmospheric pollution. This study quantifies and characterizes the ambient levels and spatial distribution of VOCs in urban and rural areas of Balıkesir. In addition, for the city drinking water dam excess flux from the traffic estimation was done. For these assessments passive sampling of VOCs performed at approximately 50 locations in and around the city of Balıkesir and analyzed with GC-FID system. Tenax TA w...
Spatial and temporal distribution of inorganic and organic pollutant concentrations at Northwestern Anatolia
Sarısaltık, Ufuk; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Concentrations of inorganic pollutants including NO2, SO2, O3 and organic pollutants including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and m&p-xylene, which are known as BTEX compounds were measured on a seasonal basis in 13 cities located in the Central and Northern parts of Anatolian Plateau. Cities included in measurements were Ankara, Bartın, Bolu, Çankırı, Düzce, Eskişehir, Karabük, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Kütahya, Yozgat, and Zonguldak. Sampling was performed in four seasonal campaigns in eac...
