Effects of diffusion in hypersonic flow

2016
Gür, Hilmi Berk
Hypersonic flows become popular due to its use in space explorations and military applications. It occurs normaly, when a space craft re-enter to the atmosphere. Space crafts are exposed to high temperatures and high pressures because of Earth’s atmposhere and gravity. In addition in high temperatures, gases tend to react with each other. These reactions also have effects on space craft’s surface. In order to calculate these effects, all physical phenomena must be calculated. One of these phenomena is diffusion. Diffusioncanbeidentifiedasmovementofthespecies(O2,N2,ie.). There are various models for diffusion. Fick’s Law of Diffusion is simplest one. In Fick’s Law, concentration differences of the species are taken as a driving force. However, therearemoreeffectsratherthanconcentrationdifferences. Therefore, themost frequently applied model is the Stefan-Maxwell Diffusion Equation. In this model, diffusion fluxes are calculated not only with concentration differences but also, with diffusion fluxes of other species. In diffusion calculation, diffusion coefficient or diffusivity plays an important role as conductivity constant. One method to calculate diffusivityisConstantLewisNumbermethod. Itisassumedthat,Lewisnumberdoes not change with the temperature gradient. Bertin [4] used more complex and accurate model. He calculated diffusivity with the effect of molecular properties. Lastly, Stefan-Maxwell calculated diffusivity with the effect of different species and their collision. These calculations are examined with each cases. In this thesis, Apollo AS-202 Command Module is selected as a re-entry space craft. Structural grid is applied around the geometry. Newton-GMRES method is used to solve flow field. Different CFD considerations are used in order to calculate the physical effects accurately in terms of numerical efficiency. The solution must be independent of grid size. Therefore four different grids are used; course, medium and fine grid, to analyze grid independence. Van Leer flux splitting method is selected as Flux splitting method. In this study diffusion effects in hypersonic flow are studied and compare it with experimental results and calculation with different models.

The knowledge of physical phenomena and numerical computation skills are required to simulate flow field around the re-entry capsule due to extreme conditions resulted by high speed and high energy of capsule. The re-entries of spacecraft occur generally at high hypersonic speed where reactions take place actively, and where plasma field around geometry as well as radiation from the surface affect characteristics of the flow field. In these conditions, ideal gas assumption fails; thus, real gas assumption i...

Metallic materials in aerospace structures are exposed to impact type loads depending on their usage area. High strain rate material characterization of metallic materials is very crucial to properly prepare finite element models to be used in impact loading situations. Johnson-Cook material model is a suitable material model to represent the behaviour of metallic materials at high strain rates. In the present thesis study, parameters of the Johnson-Cook material model for Al 7075-T651 are determined utiliz...
A Control moment gyroscope based on rotational vibrations, dynamic model and experimentation
Arberkli, Ferhat; Azgın, Kıvanç; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2018)
Satellite attitude determination and control system is one of the main subsystems of a spacecraft. Within this domain, there are several types of actuators; such as reaction wheels, control moment gyroscopes (CMG), propulsion systems and magnetic torque rods. All of them are common and currently being used on modern satellites and space stations depending on the application. Conventional reaction wheel and CMG operation are based on the continuous rotation of their rotor mass to exchange angular momentum be...
Attitude control of an earth orbiting solar sail satellite to progressively change the selected orbital element
Ataş, Ömer; Tekinalp, Ozan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
Solar sailing is currently under investigation for space propulsion. Radiation pressure from the Sun is utilized to propel the spacecraft. This thesis examines locally optimal steering law to progressively change the selected orbital elements, without considering others, of an Earth centered Keplerian orbit of a cube satellite with solar sail. The proper attitude maneuver mechanization is proposed to harvest highest solar radiation force in the desired direction for such Earth orbiting satellites. The satel...
Satellite orbit estimation using kalman filters
İpek, Mehmet; Orguner, Umut; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2017)
In this thesis, satellite orbit determination problem is investigated using various types of Kalman filters based on several ground and space based measurement types. First, the performance of the Gauss' method for initial orbit determination is evaluated and the measurement time separation values required for it to give sufficiently good estimates are determined. Second, filter initialization methods based on a few measurements are proposed for angles only (AE), angles and range (AER), angles and Doppler (...
