Experimental testing of 9 different rectangular compound cross-section flow measurement flumes with different downstream slopes was conducted to yield the coefficient of discharge and the approach velocity coefficient. The aim of the experimental research was the determination of stage-discharge relationship in compound cross-section flow measurement flumes with different downstream slopes. One empirical predictive model for each of the coefficient of discharge and the approach velocity coefficient for the 9 cross-sections have been derived using one dimensionless parameter for the coefficient of discharge and another one dimensionless parameter for the approach velocity coefficient as the single independent variable. This approach is preferred as it allows the estimation of discharge by only measuring the water depth at the head measurement section. All obtained predictive models statistics have indicated the high reliability of the derived models in estimating discharge in an open channel flume of a rectangular compound cross-section using the predicted coefficients.

A series of laboratory experiments was performed in order to investigate the effects of width of the lower weir crest and step height of broad-crested weirs of rectangular compound cross section on the values of the discharge coefficient, the approach velocity coefficient, and the modular limit. For this purpose, nine different broad-crested weir models with rectangular compound cross sections and a model with a rectangular cross section were tested in a horizontal laboratory flume of 11.0 m length, 0.29 m ...
Streamwise oscillations of a cylinder beneath a free surface: Free surface effects on fluid forces
Kocabiyik, Serpil; Bozkaya, Canan (2015-11-01)
A two-dimensional free surface flow past a circular cylinder forced to perform streamwise oscillations in the presence of an oncoming uniform flow is investigated at a Reynolds number of R=200 and fixed displacement amplitude, A=0.13, for the forcing frequency-to-natural shedding frequency ratios, f/f(0) = 1.5, 2.5, 3.5. The present two-fluid model is based on a velocity-pressure formulation of the two-dimensional continuity and unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The continuity and Navier-Stokes equations ar...
Stream gauging by combined use of surface PTV and CFD techniques in channel flows
GHARAHJEH, Sİamak; Aydın, İsmail (2015-07-03)
A video imagery technique for free surface velocity measuring is presented and used to calculate discharge for uniform open channel flows numerically. When the surface velocities are measured and used as boundary conditions on the water surface, velocity field can then be solved numerically to satisfy the surface boundary conditions. This approach can provide a precise tool for velocity field, discharge and boundary shear distribution calculation. PTV or particle tracking velocimetry is implemented over the...

Boundary roughness is an important hydraulic parameter in describing dynamics of free surface flows. There is no direct method to estimate the possible boundary resistance in natural environment. Available empirical formulations are based on the particle
