HYBRID CATALYTIC COMBUSTION OF METHANE/HYDROGEN MIXTURES
Cimino, S.; Allouis, Christophe Gerard; Mancino, G.; Nigro, R. (2014-05-01)
Hybrid catalytic combustion technology, which is a staged process comprising a preliminary catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) step followed by a homogeneous flame combustion with interstage heat removal, was tested for the first time with mixtures of methane and hydrogen. Short contact time CPO experiments were run to elucidate the effect of the progressive substitution of methane with H-2 in the fuel feed to the structured catalytic reactor, which was operated under self-sustained conditions at high tempera...
Polysilicon thin film processing on glass and photovoltaic applications
Karaman, Mehmet; Turan, Raşit; Tüzün Özmen, Özge; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2016)
In this PhD study, crystallization of amorphous silicon on glass and its photovoltaic applications have been investigated. The crystallization of amorphous silicon (a-Si) was studied in two parts; Metal Induced Crystallization (MIC) and Laser Induced Crystallization (LIC). MIC method was first implemented by gold nanoparticle (AuNP) fabricated by dewetting technique by which gold thin films deposited on aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) coated glass were annealed for nanoparticle formation. A-Si was then depo...
Ultrafast nonlinearities and dispersion in slow-light photonic crystal lattices
Wong, Chee Wei; McMillan, James F; Gu, Tingyi; Marko, Matthew; Li, Xiujian; Hsieh, PinChun; Kocaman, Serdar (2012-06-20)
We describe the ab initio control of photons in highly-dispersive slow-light photonic crystals and superlattices. Ultrafast nonlinearities such as chip-scale four-wave mixing, regenerative oscillations, self-phase modulation, and phase-resolved soliton dynamics and compression will be highlighted.
Nanowires for energy generation
Hiralal, Pritesh; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Amaratunga, Gehan A. J. (IOP Publishing, 2012-05-17)
As a result of their morphology, nanowires bring new properties and the promise of performance for a range of electronic devices. This review looks into the properties of nanowires and the multiple ways in which they have been exploited for energy generation, from photovoltaics to piezoelectric generators.
Hybrid excited synchronous generator design and comparison of direct drive wind turbines
Akgemci, Aysel; Keysan, Ozan; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
Various types of electrical generators are used in wind turbines and there is not an agreement on the best generator type. Although, high speed Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs) are still the most common generator topology utilized in wind turbine systems, there is a trends toward direct-drive Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs), as they are more efficient and reliable. However, permanent magnets (PMs) induce uncontrollable voltage due to the fixed flux resulting from PM excitation. Conven...
