Self-assembling thermo-reversibly gelling anionic and zwitterionic pentablock copolymers were used as templates for precipitation of calcium phosphate nanostructures, controlling their size and ordered structural arrangement. Calcium and phosphate ions were dissolved ill a block-copolymer micellar dispersion at low temperatures. Aging at ambient temperature produced inorganic nanoparticles, presumably nucleated by ionic interactions. The self-assembled nanocomposites were characterized by small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). H-1-P-31 NMR with 1H spin diffusion from polymer to phosphate proved the formation of nanocomposites, with inorganic particle sizes from similar to 2 nm, characterized by 1H-P-31 dipolar couplings, to > 100 nm. TEM analysis showed polymer micelles surrounded by calcium phosphate. SAXS attested that a significant fraction of the calcium phosphate was templated by the polymer micelles. SANS data indicated that the order of the polymer was enhanced by the inorganic phase. The nanocomposite gels exhibited higher moduli than the neat polymer gels. The calcium phosphate was characterized by TGA, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution TEM, and various NMR techniques. An unusual crystalline phase with >= 2 chemically and >= 3 magnetically inequivalent HPO42- ions was observed with the zwitterionic copolymer, highlighting the influence of the polymer on the calcium phosphate crystallization. The inorganic fraction of the nanocomposite was around 30 wt % of the dried hydrogel. Thus, a significant fraction of calcium phosphate has been templated by the tailored self-assembling ionic block copolymers, providing a bottom-up approach to nanocomposite Synthesis.

Synthesis and mesophase properties of block and random co-polymers of electroactive and liquid crystalline monomers
Yilmaz, F; Kasapoglu, F; Hepuzer, Y; Yagci, Y; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Fernandes, EG; Galli, G (Informa UK Limited, 2005-01-01)
Homo-polymers and random co-polymers of electroactive and liquid crystalline monomers, namely 3-thienylmethyl methacrylate (MTM) and 6-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)hexyl acrylate (LC6), were prepared by conventional free radical polymerization. Block co-polymers of MTM and LC6 were also synthesized by using the 1,1-diphenylethene (DPE) method. The obtained random and block co-polymers exhibited liquid crystal behavior depending on the content of the LC6 units. It was found that microphase separation of the polym...
Synthesis and electro-optical properties of a new copolymer based on EDOT and carbazole
Akbayrak, Merve; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Informa UK Limited, 2016-01-01)
A new copolymer of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and 5-(2-ethylhexyl)-1,3-bis(9-methyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-5H-thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (CzPDICz) was electrochemically synthesized using different monomer feed ratios. The resulting copolymer films were investigated in terms of their electrochemical and electro-optical behaviors. Properties of the obtained copolymer films through different monomer feed ratios were compared to each other and to individual poly(ethylenedioxythiophene; PEDOT) and homopoly...
New, highly stable electrochromic polymers from 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-bis-substituted quinoxalines toward green polymeric materials
Durmus, Asuman; Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem; Toppare, Levent Kamil (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2007-12-11)
Two new highly stable electrochromic polymers, poly(5,8-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2,3-di(thiophen-2-yl)quinoxaline) (PDETQ) and poly (5,8-bis(2,3 -dihydrothieno[3,4-b][ 1,4]dioxin-5yl)quinoxaline) (PDEQ) were synthesized, and their potential use as neutral state green polymeric materials was investigated. Spectroelectrochemistry showed that both polymers reveal two distinct absorption bands as expected for this type of donor-acceptor polymer, at 410 and 660 nm for PDEQ and 405 and 780 nm...
Synthesis and characterization of graft and branched polymers via type-II photoinitiation
Muftuoglu, AE; Saner, B; Demirel, AL; Yagci, Y (Informa UK Limited, 2005-01-01)
Preparation of graft and branched polymers via photo-induced radical polymerization and photo-induced self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) routes, respectively, was studied. Precursor random co-polymers of styrene (St) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DAEMA) were obtained via thermal polymerization initiated by azoisobutyronitrile, (AIBN) and used as macromolecular co-initiators in photo-induced grafting experiments. Successful grafting was achieved, while cross-linking also occurred to some ...
Synthesis and structure elucidation of bromination products from dibromohomobenzonorbornadienes: high temperature bromination - Part 17
Kazaz, C; Dastan, A; Balcı, Metin (Wiley, 2005-01-01)
The electrophilic addition of bromine to dibromohomobenzonorbornadiene derivatives at -45 +/- 5degreesC led to the formation of the rearranged and non-rearranged tetrabromides in a ratio of 6:4. However, high-temperature bromination of the same system in CCl4 at 77degreesC produced only non-rearranged products. The formation mechanism of the isomers and the role of the substituent on the rearrangement is discussed. The structure elucidation of the isomeric tetrabromides was achieved from NMR spectral data. ...
