Assessment of marble waste utilization as an alternative sorbent to limestone for SO2 control

2014-12-01
The possibility of marble waste utilization in wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) as an alternative to limestone was assessed. Chemical compositions, specific surface areas, grindabilities, dissolution liabilities and SO2 capture capabilities of five different marble wastes were determined and compared with three limestones used in WFGD systems. Chemical compositions of marble wastes were comparable with limestones, including significant CaCO3 and lower fractions of MgCO3. All limestones and marble wastes had low specific surface areas. Marble wastes had lower Bond Work Indices (BWI) than limestones, implying a higher liability to size reduction. Dissolution behavior was sample specific. Some marble waste types showed higher or comparable dissolution rates with limestones while some resulted in a relatively slower dissolution. A higher calcite favored the dissolution rate while an increase in dolomite reduced the liability to dissolution. Assessment of the FTIR spectra obtained by evolved gas analysis (EGA) revealed better or comparable SO2 retention with some marble waste types as compared to limestones. The capability of SO2 control was a function of the extent of calcite in the sorbents. In view of these, a significant opportunity was anticipated for the wastes of some marble types as an alternative sorbent in WFGD.

Marble Wastes as a Calcareous Sorbent for SO2 Control in Thermal Power Plants
Altun, Naci Emre (2019-08-20)
In this study, the possibility of using marble wastes for SO2 control in coal-fired thermal power plants was assessed. The goal is suggesting marble wastes as an altarnative calcareous sorbent to limestones for use in WFGD systems. Chemical compositions, specific surface areas, grindabilities, reactivities and SO2 capture capabilities of different marble wastes were identified and compared with three different limestones that are currently in use in thermal power plants. Marble wastes had higher or comparab...
Evaluation of the hazardous waste landfill cap system design and clay layer thickness criteria of the Turkish Regulation on the Control of Hazardous Waste (RCHW) using the Hydrological Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model
Piskin, F. Yalcin; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (Inderscience Publishers, 2007-01-01)
The hazardous waste landfill design criteria of the Turkish Regulation on the Control of Hazardous Waste (RCHW) was evaluated in this study. In the first part of the study, Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model was used to determine the significance of different components of the hazardous waste landfill cap system as required by the Turkish RCHW. In the second part of the study, the top and bottom clay layer thickness requirement of the Turkish RCHW was evaluated by running the HELP mo...
Mechanical properties, durability, and life-cycle assessment of self-consolidating concrete mixtures made with blended portland cements containing fly ash and limestone powder
Çelik, Kemal; Akgül, Çağla; Gursel, A. Petek; Mehta, P Kumar; Horvath, Arpad; Monteiro, Paulo JM (2015-02-01)
This paper reports the composition and properties of highly flowable self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures made of high proportions of cement replacement materials such as fly ash and pulverized limestone instead of high dosage of a plasticizing agent or viscosity-modifying chemical admixtures. Self-consolidating concrete mixtures are being increasingly used for the construction of highly reinforced complex concrete elements and for massive concrete structures such as dams and thick foundation. In this...
Performance evaluation of landfills with the HELP (hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance) model: Izmit case study
Yalcin, F; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2002-10-01)
Landfilling is the most economical and commonly used final disposal method of municipal solid and hazardous wastes. Leachate, which is the inevitable output of the landfills, may cause serious pollution problems if not properly handled. In this study, the hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) model was used to examine the performance of the hazardous waste lot (HWL) of Izmit Industrial and Domestic Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill for three different cases. These cases were the (1) existing desi...
Hydration and properties of limestone incorporated cementitious systems
Erdoğdu, Korhan; Tokyay, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2002)
As limestone is a new widely used mineral addition in cement, understanding the effects of this material on cement properties and hydration in a detailed manner is of substantial importance for efficient and proper usage. Consequently, the current study is designed. In the experiemental study, three different limestones were used. The aim of using different limestones is to reach broad generalisations by crosschecking the results and compare the effects of limestones with different structures. These limesto...
