Risky business or competitive power? Supplier involvement in Japanese product design

1997-09-01
Notwithstanding the alleged risks of outsourcing design work, leading manufacturers in the Japanese automotive industry collaborate closely with their key suppliers. Despite widespread recognition of the effectiveness of these close-knit supplier networks, however, little research exists on the factors that affect the purchase of design work from suppliers.

Hierarchical and modular control of reconfigurable manufacturing systems
Arslan, Övül; Schmidt, Klaus Verner; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-2-11)
Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) were introduced as a new manufacturing concept for rapidly adjusting the production capacity and functionality of manufacturing systems. Hereby, the control of RMS requires realizing each desired configuration and changing between configurations on request, whereby a suitable design approach should scale to large-scale systems. In this thesis, we develop a controller design method for RMS that supports modular design and is scalable to RMS of large size. As the f...
Optimal configuration changes for reconfigurable manufacturing systems
Schmidt, Klaus Verner (2013-01-01)
Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) are designed to quickly adapt to new products and production requirements. To this end, RMSs need to be able to perform fast changes between different configurations. This paper investigates the reconfiguration of RMSs in a supervisory control framework. Different from previous work, we formulate and solve a reconfiguration problem that allows to start a newly requested configuration before the previously active configuration has been completed. Our solution is op...
Supplier involvement in design a comparative survey of automotive suppliers in the USA UK and Japan
LIKER, JEFFREY K; KAMATH, RAJAN R; Wasti Pamuksuz, Syeda Nazlı (1998-09-01)
This paper examines supplier involvement in design based on survey data from 145 Japanese, 189 US and 87 UK automotive component suppliers. First, cross‐national differences in the degree of supplier involvement are examined. Second, regression analysis is used to identify factors which predict high or low levels of supplier involvement in design. Third, the effects of supplier involvement in product development on the degree to which products are designed for manufacturability are assessed. The data show t...
Neural Network Model to Support International Market Entry Decisions
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2004-02-01)
Bidding for international construction projects is a critical decision for companies that aim to position themselves in the global construction market. Determination of attractive projects and markets where the competitive advantage of a company is high requires extensive environmental scanning, forecasting, and learning from the experience of competitors in international markets. In this paper, a neuronet model has been developed as a decision support tool that can classify international projects with resp...
ENGINEERING EMOTIONAL DESIGN (ENGAGE)
Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma(2004-11-11)
Today the bottleneck in introducing new successful products quickly to the market has moved from factory floor manufacturing to the product specification, design and evaluation process, although of course world-class manufacturing remains essential. 'Quality' has moved beyond functionality and usability to satisfying people's subjective and emotional lifestyle needs. This can only be achieved by breakthrough knowledge-based changes in the conception of products to maintain and increase EU competitiveness un...
