Plasmas offer a unique environment to enhance and change the properties of polymeric materials. These enhancements can be well characterized by various methods based on radiation measurement schemes. Using a novel approach based on a dual-RF plasma generation scheme, polypropylene samples were processed in argon-rich environments for varying treatment parameters such as power and duration of exposure. By using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) the change in crystallinity of thin polypropylene sheets was observed through a correlated change in refractive index of the material in the low-frequency THz range (0.1-0.6 THz). The THz measurements were further supported by the increase in the strength of the first order X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks from the semi-crystalline polypropylene unit cell structure typically associated with the alpha-phase. The corresponding change in refractive index in the low-frequency THz range with increase in crystallinity as observed in the XRD measurements is explained through the increase in structural order of the polymer sample. These measurements show that tools such as THz-TDS can be useful in understanding the relative change in structure of polymer materials when processed using plasma-based techniques.

Influence of oxygen plasma modification on surface free energy of PMMA films and cell attachment
Ozcan, Canturk; Zorlutuna, Pinar; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Hasırcı, Nesrin (2007-10-04)
For any biomaterial placed into a biological medium, the surface properties of the material, such as porosity, crystallinity, presence and distribution of electrical charge and functional groups are very critical parameters that determine the acceptance or rejection of the material. Applications, especially tissue engineering require some surface modifications at the molecular level without disturbing the bulk properties of the implants in order to enhance the cell attachment on the material. An appropriate...
Oxygen plasma modification of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) film surfaces for tissue engineering purposes
Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Hasırcı, Nesrin (2003-02-22)
Plasma glow-discharge application is known as a technique to coat or modify the surfaces of various materials. In this study, the influence of oxygen rf-plasma treatment on surface and bulk properties of a biological polyester, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), were studied by determining water content and water contact angle, and by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The plasma-treated films absorbed more water than the untreated film, and the a...
Realization of neutral state green polymeric materials
Durmuş, Asuman; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2009)
Polymeric electrochromic materials that has as one of the three complementary colors (red, green, and blue) in the neutral form and become transparent via oxidation (or reduction), has a crucial importance towards use of these materials in electrochromic devices and displays. To reflect red or blue color in neutral state, the materials have to absorb at only one dominant wavelength. On the contrary, to have a green color, there should exist at least two simultaneous absorption bands in the red and blue regi...
Assessing effects of (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane self-assembled layers on surface characteristics of organosilane-grafted moisture-crosslinked polyethylene substrate: A comparative study between chemical vapor deposition and plasma-facilitated in situ grafting methods
Sarkari, Navid Mostofi; Doğan, Öznur; Bat, Erhan; Mohseni, Mohsen; Ebrahimi, Morteza (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-15)
Silane coupling agents can act as bonding intermediates at the interface of two dissimilar materials by altering surface properties. In this study, (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) was used as a silane precursor for vapor-phase deposition on organosilane-grafted moisture-crosslinked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) substrate. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and plasma-facilitated in situ grafting methods (grafting-from and grafting-onto) were employed to graft APTMS, and the consequent effects on surface of S...
Foamed eva-bitumen blends and composites
Çankaya, Burhan Fuat; Bayramlı, Erdal; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
The thermal conductivities of foamed polymer based materials are much lower thermal conductivity values than unfoamed polymeric materials. Especially, thermal conductivity values of foamed polymers with closed-cell structure decreases to 0.03 W/m.K. The reinforcement of foamed polymeric materials by mixing with bitumen lowers the raw material cost. The main objective of this study is to make a new thermal insulation material with low thermal conductance. In this study, the effects of concentration of calciu...
