Evaluation of the efficiency increment potential for francis turbines using CFD analysis
Özcan, Arslan Ömür; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
Francis turbine is a widely used hydraulic turbine in hydropower plants. This thesis analyzes a Francis turbine using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and offers an improved design in case of energy production. First the initial performance of the turbine is analyzed using CFD analysis, possible cavitation regions are evaluated and design point of the turbine is found using hill chart method and compared with the on-site efficiency measurement results. Then an optimization study is held to improv...

Evaluation of latent heat of solidification of grey cast iron from cooling curves
Çetin, Asude; Kalkanlı, Ali (2005-01-01)
The temperature history in the casting obtained from cooling curves can be used to determine some information related to latent heat release during alloy solidification. This work presents a procedure for the evaluation of latent heat of primary and eutectic solidification of grey cast iron from cooling curves based upon the Newtonian cooling principle. The thermal data obtained from quik-cups are processed with the Mathcad code in order to obtain the cooling curve, its first and second derivatives and the ...
Evaluation of Seismic Response Factors for Eccentrically Braced Frames Using FEMA P695 Methodology
KUŞYILMAZ, Ahmet; Topkaya, Cem (SAGE Publications, 2016-02-01)
This paper reports details of a numerical study undertaken to evaluate seismic response factors for steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) using the FEMA P695 methodology. Six archetypes were designed by making use of the current U.S. specifications, and their behavior was assessed by making use of nonsimulated collapse models. Results indicate that the current values of response factors result in designs with higher collapse probabilities than expected. Two modifications were developed to bring the colla...
Evaluation of Isolated Impact of Trans Fatty Acids on Short Dough Product
Sahin, Kubra; Mert, Behiç; Tekin, Aziz (2016-08-01)
In this study, the effects of trans fatty acids (TFAs) on rheological properties of dough (elastic moduli (G'), loss moduli (G''), complex modulus (G*)) and textural properties of dough and cookie (hardness) were studied. Two different groups of fat samples having different TFA composition but similar solid fat content (SFC) were prepared. Samples of the first group (group 1) had TFA between 0.0 and 56.23 %, while the samples of the second group (group 2) contained trans isomers ranging from 0.0 to 44.40 %....
