Antenna selection is an effective approach to reduce hardware cost as well as increasing channel diversity. In this paper, broadcast beamforming design with antenna selection is considered for cognitive radio networks. In the presence of primary users, it is usually difficult to satisfy quality of service (QoS) constraints of the all secondary users while keeping the interference towards the primary users below a certain threshold. User selection is a good method in order to make the problem feasible. In this paper, discrete phase-only beamforming is considered due to its simplicity and certain advantages. The joint problem is converted into linear form and solved optimally by using mixed integer linear programming. Simulation results show that significant power saving is possible compared to fixed antenna systems.

Optimum discrete phase-only multicast beamforming with joint antenna and user selection in cognitive radio networks
DEMİR, ÖZLEM TUĞFE; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2015-11-01)
Spectrum underlay technique for secondary multicast network is an effective approach in cognitive radio. In such communication schemes, quality of service constraints are satisfied for the secondary users while interference to the primary users is kept under a threshold. Previous literature consists of suboptimum methods for the solution of the individual problems such as antenna and user selection. In this paper, the joint antenna and user selection problem is considered and solved in an optimum manner. Co...
OPTIMUM PHASE-ONLY DISCRETE BROADCAST BEAMFORMING WITH ANTENNA AND USER SELECTION IN INTERFERENCE LIMITED COGNITIVE RADIO NETWORKS
Demir, Özlem Tuğfe; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2015-04-24)
Phase-only beamforming presents certain advantages in radar and communication systems. In cognitive radio, antenna and user selection are the two tools for increasing the quality of service (QoS) for the users. In this paper, discrete single group multicast transmit phase-only beamformer design is presented with antenna subset and user selection. The problem is converted into linear form and solved efficiently by using mixed integer linear programming to find the optimum subset of antennas and secondary use...
Ground Calibration of Antenna Arrays For Complex Platforms
Elbir, Ahmet M.; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2013-10-18)
When antenna arrays are placed on platforms, antenna patterns and antenna characteristics change significantly. Calibration of antenna arrays becomes an inevitable and important task to correct the imperfections due to the antenna surroundings. In this paper, a time-gating method is proposed to calibrate the direction finding antenna array on a UH-60 helicopter on ground. The helicopter is placed above the ground plane whereas the source antenna is further away to account for the reflections from the helico...
OPTIMUM DISCRETE DISTRIBUTED BEAMFORMING FOR SINGLE GROUP MULTICASTING RELAY NETWORKS WITH RELAY SELECTION
Demir, Özlem Tuğfe; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2015-04-24)
In this paper, broadcast beamforming with relay selection is considered in wireless relay networks where there is no direct link between the source and the receivers. A source node transmits common information to many users employing multiple relays which use amplify-and-forward relay protocol. The channel state information is assumed to be available at a single relay to compute the relay weights and distribute them. Discrete relay weights are used due to several advantages including decreased overhead for ...
OPTIMUM DISCRETE PHASE-ONLY TRANSMIT BEAMFORMING WITH ANTENNA SELECTION
Demir, Özlem Tuğfe; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2014-09-05)
Phase-only beamforming is used in radar and communication systems due to its certain advantages. Antenna selection becomes an important problem as the number of antennas becomes larger than the number of transmit-receive chains. In this paper, discrete single group multicast transmit phase-only beamformer design with antenna subset selection is considered. The problem is converted into linear form and solved efficiently by using mixed integer linear programming to find the optimum subset of antennas and bea...
