The paper is on using jokes to introduce certain mathematical concepts. The main point is attracting the student to a discussion which is initiated with an anecdote. On the one hand some very common and familiar concepts are used to approach a problem, on the other hand it is pointed out that one can critisize almost everything mathematically. Some examples of jokes and their mathematical relations are also given.

Students Conceptions of fractions A study of 5th grade students
Haser, Çiğdem; Ubuz, Behiye (2003-05-01)
This paper investigates students’ conception of fractions in solving word-problems. An essay type test including 10 word-problems was administered to 5th grade students in a private elementary school (N=122). An analysis of the difficulties met by the students was given through examples; evidence was given about the crucial role of the meanings of a part and a quantity, and the units in the operations.
Dancing with Isometries in Architecture
Sorguç, Arzu (2015-07-01)
This paper aims to emphasize the role of mathematics in computational design education. A computational design process that forces designers to design not only the end product but also the design process itself requires a mind shift to enable the designer to develop algorithms and skills to deal with complex relations. In this context, understanding rule-based systems, generative systems, parametric models and corresponding dimensionalities responding to the forces, variables, patterns, and the mathematics ...
Unconventional monetary policy and financialization of commodities
Ordu-Akkaya, Beyza Mina; Soytaş, Uğur (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
Our paper has two stages of analysis. First of all, we examine whether volatility spillover between US equity and commodity markets has significantly changed with the heavy influx of index traders in commodity derivatives markets, which is a phenomenon referred to as financialization. Given that previous findings show institutional traders enter into commodity markets at high liquidity episodepbs, in the second stage of our analysis, we investigate the particular impact of US quantitative easing policy on s...
Linear Planning Logic: An Efficient Language and Theorem Prover for Robotic Task Planning
Kortik, Sitar; Saranlı, Uluç (2014-06-07)
In this paper, we introduce a novel logic language and theorem prover for robotic task planning. Our language, which we call Linear Planning Logic (LPL), is a fragment of linear logic whose resource-conscious semantics are well suited for reasoning with dynamic state, while its structure admits efficient theorem provers for automatic plan construction. LPL can be considered as an extension of Linear Hereditary Harrop Formulas (LHHF), whose careful design allows the minimization of nondeterminism in proof se...
Leading to a Better Understanding of the Particle-in-a-Quantum-Corral Model
Agcali, Rahime Yagmur; Atik, Bahar; Bilgen, Ecenaz; Karli, Berfu; Danışman, Mehmet Fatih (2019-01-01)
Understanding the concepts of quantum mechanics has always been a challenge for undergraduate students. This is especially so because many of the introductory (analytically solvable) systems and problems discussed in textbooks are seemingly abstract. Using approximate experimental demonstrations of such systems and problems have been shown to be very helpful in teaching and illustrating the basic concepts of quantum mechanics. One such system is the particle-inside-a-ring system, whose experimental demonstr...
