Accretion powered X-ray pulsars

2004-06-18
I will review the class of accreting powered neutron stars that are in close binary systems. I will summarize the recent developments and the main properties of the neutron stars. These include the formation of X-ray spectra, formation of pulse profiles, quasi periodic oscillations, pulse frequency fluctuations, long term variations and orbital period decay of X-ray binaries.

Magnetic activity and evolution of Algol-type stars - II
SARNA, MAREK; Yerli, Sinan Kaan; Muslimov, A G (1998-07-01)
We examine the possibility of probing dynamo action in mass-losing stars, components of Algol-type binaries, Our analysis is based on the calculation of nonconservative evolution of these systems, We model the systems U Sge and beta Per where the more massive companion fills its Roche lobe at the main sequence (case AB) and where it has a small helium core (early case B) respectively, We show that to maintain evolution of these systems at the late stages which are presumably driven by stellar 'magnetic brak...
X-ray analysis of high mass x-ray binary pulsars
Şahiner, Şeyda; Baykal, Altan; İnam, Sıtkı Çağdaş; Department of Physics (2015)
In this thesis, X-ray properties of three high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars are analysed, using the data of X-ray satellites such as RXTE, INTEGRAL and Swift. Selected sources belong to different subgroups of the HMXB family. The first system, 4U 1907+09 is a classical wind-fed supergiant system with persistent X-ray emission; although it shows irregular flares and dips. SWIFT J1729.9-3437 and SWIFT J0513.4-6547 are newly discovered transient systems. Although the counterpart of SWIFT J1729.9-3437 could...
Optical Modulation With Silicon Microspheres
Yüce, Emre; Serpenguzel, Ali (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2009-10-15)
In this letter, a silicon microsphere coupled to a silica optical fiber half coupler has been characterized for electrooptical modulation in the L-band at 1.55 mu m. Electrooptical modulation of the transmitted and the 90 degrees elastic scattered signals for both the TE and the TM polarizations of the microsphere resonances has been observed.

VERITAS, an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) system for gammma-ray astronomy in the GeV-TeV range, has recently completed its first season of observations with a full array of four telescopes. A number of astrophysical gamma-ray sources have been detected, both galactic and extragalactic, including sources previously unknown at TeV energies. We describe the status of the array and some highlight results, and assess the technical performance, sensitivity and shower reconstruction capabilities.
Phonon dispersions and elastic constants of disordered Pd-Ni alloys
Kart, SO; Tomak, Mehmet; Cagin, T (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-31)
Phonon frequencies of Pd-Ni alloys are calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Lattice dynamical properties computed from Sutton-Chen (SC) and quantum Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) potentials as a function of temperature are compared with each other. We present all interatomic force constants up to the 8th nearest-neighbor shell obtained by using the calculated potential. Elastic constants evaluated by two methods are consistent with each other. The transferability of the potential is also tested. The result...
