Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is used for removable prostheses. However, PMMA denture base resin does not meet all the mechanical requirements of prostheses. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the transverse strength, modulus of elasticity, and impact strength values of nonreinforced heat-polymerized and microwave-polymerized denture base resin with those of denture base resin reinforced with continuous unidirectional E-glass, woven E-glass, and ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers. The mechanical properties of polymer reinforced with polyethylene fibers showed no significant increase in flexural properties. However, reinforcement with Stick fiber improved the mechanical properties. The test specimens that expressed low fracture strength values showed void spaces inside the test specimens. Mechanical, Vulcametric, and Thermal Properties of the Different 5-ethylidene 2-norbornene Content of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer Vulcanized with Different Types and Compositions of Peroxides
Cavdar, Seda; Ozdemir, Tonguc; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2009-05-15)
Ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) rubber is an important commercial polymer. The vulcanization process significantly changes its thermal, mechanical, and vulcametric properties. This study was carried out to find optimum formulation of EPDM composite for a better application in automotive industry. Sixteen EPDM polymer samples having different 5-ethylidene 2-norbornene (ENB) and ethylene contents were vulcanized with different types and compositions of pet-oxide and coagents. The mechanical and vulcam...
Bond strength of a silicone soft lining material to poly(methyl methacrylate) resin treated with maleic anhydride and its terpolymers
Turgut, Mehmet; Bolayir, Giray; Dogan, Orhan Murat; Keskin, Selda; Dogan, Arife; Boztug, Ali (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
This study investigated the effectiveness of surface treatment of Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base resin on tensile bond strength between PMMA/silicone-based soft liner. A total of 25 specimens were fabricated and assigned into five groups (n = 5). The surfaces of PMMA were treated with maleic anhydride, maleic anhydride-styrene-vinyl-acetate, n-butylmaleate-styrene-vinyl-acetate, or n-pentamaleate-styrene-vinyl-acetate prior to Primo adhesive primer application and silicone liner placement. T...
Mechanical properties of soft liner-poly(methyl methacrylate)-based denture material
Usanmaz, Ali; Latifoglu, MA; Dogan, A; Akkas, N; Yetmez, M (Wiley, 2002-07-18)
In this study, the mechanical properties of two different permanent soft lining materials and their bonding to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were compared. Both of the soft liners were heat-cured commercial materials. The polymerization was carried out by conventional methods suggested by manufacturer, and the curing was done at the temperature of boiling water for 5, 15, 25, and 35 min. The sample groups were tested in the computer-aided tensile-testing machine at a rate of 2 mm/min. The slow rate helps...
Water Absorption of Two Different Denture Base Resins Reinforced with Dental Fiber Systems
Durkan, Rukiye Kaplan; Oezdemir, Tonguc; Pamir, Ahmet Duru; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2010-08-05)
The absorption of water by denture base materials is important because it is directly related with dimensional stability of dental material. In this study, water absorption of denture base materials reinforced with different type of dental fiber systems was compared. The samples were prepared from heat-polymerized and microwave polymerized denture base resins and reinforced with different dental fiber systems. Five different reinforcement materials were used in this study, namely, (1) no fiber (control grou...
Dynamic mechanical properties of dental base material reinforced with glass fiber
Karacaer, O; Dogan, A; Dogan, OM; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2002-08-22)
Dynamic mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with glass fibers were investigated. The composite used as dental base material contained other additives for different purposes to give the same appearance as natural dentals. The fiber-polymer bonding and orientation of fibers in polymer matrix are very important in the application of the product. To see that, the fibers were treated with silane and compared with untreated fibers. The commercial polymer and monomer used were the ...
