Effects of sensitivity analysis on airfoil design

© 1998 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved. The effects of sensitivities on the performance of aerodynamic design optimization were evaluated. Sensitivities were obtained by both analytical and finite-difference approaches. A sensitivity code was developed to analytically obtain sensitivities for the two-dimensional Euler equations using the material derivative concept of continuum mechanics. Several inverse design optimizations were performed to evaluate the merits of the analytical approach in comparison with the finite-difference approach. The results show that the analytical approach provides accurate sensitivities consistently, improves the convergence of design cycle, and hence reduces the design cost.

A zonal Navier-Stokes solver is employed to compute the unsteady flowfield. The computational domain is discretized with overlapping uniform grids generated around each airfoil. © 1996 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights resewed. The paper presents two methods that improve the accuracy and reduce the computational cost in evaluating finite-difference sensitivities for aerodynamic shape optimization. The first method is a modified finite-difference approach that improves the accuracy of sensitivities at a reduced cost using an improved iteration strategy. The second method finds the optimum perturbation size based on an asymptotic error formula....

All rights reserved. The purpose of this study is to develop an accurate and efficient CFD code that can be used in hypersonic flows. The flow analysis is based on the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are solved by using Newton’s method. The analytical method is used to calculate the Jacobian matrix. Flow parameters and convective heat transfer are analyzed on Apollo AS-202 Command Module. Especially, temperature...

Vortical wake formations, boundary layer flows at the leading edge, the formation of leading edge vortices and their downstream convection are presented in terms of unsteady particle traces. Numerical investigation of subsonic flow over a typical missile forebody
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Platzer, Max F. (1996-01-01)
© 1996, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The NASA-Ames developed Navier-Stokes solver OVERFLOW and the panel code PMARC are applied to the computation of the flow over a typical missile forebody. The flowfields at low angles of attack from 0° to 14° are investigated. The surface pressures along the missile forebody predicted by OVERFLOW and PMARC agree well up to 10°. This favorable agreement suggests that the panel codes may be a computationally efficient tool fo...
