As one of the most important results of climate change; drought has become to be the most pervasive problem that causes water scarcity and shortage in North Cyprus. The rainfall is the only source of the natural water resources in this country which has semiarid climate with dry and hot summer and moderate winter seasons. Owing to the reduction in precipitation and increase in evaporation, the level of water in aquifers, reservoirs, and streams of North Cyprus has dropped considerably and it is certain that the water scarcity will be more difficult problem to overcome in the future. Accordingly, it is needed to study the level of the drought in this region. In this study, the main target is to identify the major drought events and their duration and severity by using Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for 33 stations in North Cyprus between 1978 and 2015. In order to find PDSI values of each station, in addition to monthly precipitation and temperature, soil available water capacity (AWC) is also required. AWC values were calculated based on soil characteristics of each station. After evaluating monthly PDSI values, the historical drought events are identified and the Mann Kendall Trend test is applied. As a result, it has been found that there are mainly 6 dry periods occurred from the September 1978 to August 2015. The drought occurred between 2004 and 2005 was remarkable severe. Generally, North Cyprus is 28% near normal, 45% drought and 27% wet. However, statistically significant downward trend is evident in almost all stations

A bootstrap application on the standard normal homogeneity test snht when there is not highlycorrelated reference series
Yazıcı, Ceyda; Batmaz, İnci; Yozgatlıgil, Ceylan (null; 2015-07-31)
Climate change possesses many risks for the environment and human beings. The related events such as floods or droughts should be predicted and the precautions should be taken to reduce the damage that may be caused by the extreme events. In order to conduct analyses on climate data, the quality control process should be applied to obtain reliable results. Homogeneity analysis, which is the quality control of the meteorological data, is defined as the detection of non-climatic factors. Standard Normal Homog...
Modelling weather index based drought insurance for provinces in the Central Anatolia Region
Evkaya, Ö. Ozan; Yıldırak, Ş. Kasırga; Department of Actuarial Sciences (2012)
Drought, which is an important result of the climate change, is one of the most serious natural hazards globally. It has been agreed all over the world that it has adverse impacts on the production of agriculture, which plays a major role in the economy of a country. Studies showed that the results of the drought directly affected the crop yields, and it seems that this negative impact will continue drastically soon. Moreover, many researches revealed that, Turkey will be affected from the results of climat...
Adaptation to Climate Change Barriers in the Turkish Local Context
Balaban, Osman (2015-11-01)
Climate change is one of the greatest environmental challenges that we face today. A certain level of climate change is now unavoidable. Along with mitigation efforts to curb further global warming, we have to take actions to adapt to the changing climatic conditions. Cities are on the front lines of climate change impacts. Therefore, the role of cities in climate change adaptation has been widely acknowledged in the last two decades. There are various obstacles that prevent city governments to develop adap...
The use of indicators to assess urban regeneration performance for climate-friendly urban development: the case of Yokohama Minato Mirai 21
Balaban, Osman (Springer, Dordrecht, 2013-01-01)
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges in the twenty-first century. Immediate actions are required to slow down climate change and address its impacts on human life and settlements. Cities can play crucial roles in this respect, as they not just contribute to causes of climate change but also are under severe threat from its impacts. Urban regeneration projects can provide opportunities to make cities more climate-friendly and less vulnerable. However, the potential role of urban regeneration in t...
Understanding Drought with Copula Functions: Case Study for Konya Province
Evkaya, Ömer Ozan; Yozgatlıgil, Ceylan; Kestel, Sevtap Ayşe (null; 2018-10-07)
Drought is one of the most drastic and complex natural phenomenon in the world, a major reason for undesired agricultural, economic and environmental damages. For this reason, the objective identification of drought and its characteristics deserve more detailed models. Most of the studies in the literature related to drought monitoring and analysis are based on special widespread quantitative drought indices. On the other hand, the generated drought indices have been derived using only one drought related p...
